Abstract
The revised Korean music textbook in 2007 of 1st grade in middle school covers various parts of Korean music compared to the past. Especially, creative Korean music has been given more weight. Creative Korean music not only reflects the comtemporary lives and thoughts but also can motivate music students make them more familiar to Korean music thanks to the interesting elements of creativeness.
Just as Western music has its past and present, Korean music should have both past and present. Our music which is being produced in days of our lives at this moment will remain as our traditional folk music in the future, and we cannot overlook this fact.
The purpose of this thesis is to suggest a guidance for teachers to educate music students by using 25-stringed-gayagum which is revised for people to be familiar to the instrument. This will eventually bring a better future for creative Korean traditional music education and the composition of this thesis is as follows.
First of all, through reviewing reference on the subject, I present the definition of creative Korean traditional music and gayageum and their historical context.
Second, for teachers to use 25-stringed-gayagum in actual classes, I suggested the tuning method through sample score and tuning score.
Third, I included the basic playing styles and methods with pictures and directions to guide how to play 25-stringed-gayagum.
Fourth, after reviewing 16 music textbooks in current 1st grade of middle school to see how the creative Korean music has been presented, I analyzed two of the most often taught songs and suggested a teaching/educating course and playing method.
Although Korean traditional music education must be done traditionally by using traditional instruments based on professional knowledge on it, this is far from reality in actual music classes. I hope this research practically can be used by teachers at schools to educate Korean traditional music.
