Abstract
A study on Haseo Kim In-hu's Poem
of Seasonal Customs

This paper is for the study that analyzes Haseo Kim In-hu's thoughts, who represents confucian scholar and a wenren in Honam, and with his poems of seasonal customs. , which is a collection of his works, contains approximately 52 numbers of poems. With base of these poems, this research focused on poems related with holidays, which are Jung-woel, Han-sik, Dan-oh, and Jung-chu-jul, poems related with Byuk-Sa, which are Ip-chun, Dap-chung-jul, Yu-du, and Dong-ji, and other poems such as Suk-jun-il and Nap-il. From study of these poems, this research will figure out his motive. Through his motive, literal status of poem of seasonal customs from Kim In-hu also will be figure out.
Jung-woel, one of the poems of seasonal customs that is related to Korea tradition festive day, is the first day of the lunar calendar. It has been distinguished New Year's Day in the lunar calendar and fifteenth day of the lunar month. Kim In-hu considers Jung-woel as important, and demonstrates affection for Yang San-Bo. It can be seen in his poems on January that is related to farming and the spirit of affection for people.
Han-sik falls on the 105th day after the winter solstice or early April. It has been described the circumstances of town on Han-sik objectively in Kim In-hu's poems of seasonal customs and illustrated vividly with contrasts of colors and metaphor. He expressed the will on loyalty and uprightness as a liege and as a king in his poem.
Dan-oh is May fifth in the lunar calendar and is considered as the four great tradition festive day in Korea. Dan-oh came from the death of Gulwon in Chuguo, China. Kim In-hu expressed his feeling being sorry by death of Gulwon in written words. Dan-oh-chup describes wish of health of king and rich year, and he expresses his mind about well-being life of ordinary people based on agriculture.
Jung-chu-jul is Fifteenth of August in the lunar and is called Han-ga-wee or Chu-seok. His poems of customs does not mentioned concretely about the customs of Jung-chu-jul. He took care of the people's life and concerned suffering from a bad year.
Ip-chun related to Byuk-Sa falls on between New Year's Day and the 15th day of the first lunar month of January. There were some customs that wish them good luck for a year with customs of January by preparing farming in farm houses. Kim In-hu concerned about well-being of the people and put a stress on the importance of the beginning of farming. Also, he wished a country with full of good energy from spring.
Dap-chung-chul is Sap-jit-nal on March. 03 in lunatic calendar. In poem of Kim In-hu, Description of spring scene improves this poem, and poem also contains image of writer with rural life, who retire his public service.
Yu-du is 15th of June in the lunar calendar, means wash hair with running water especially toward the east refers to get yang energy and not be affected by the heat. It is also a festive day peculiar to Korea. Kim In-hu describe his personal emotion to his poem. This description makes literature of emotion with humane atmosphere.
Dong-ji on November in the lunar calendar and around 22th of December in the solar calendar. This is the day, which is the shortest daytime and the longest nighttime and the beginning time to originate yang. He demonstrated that the character of yin and yang in Dong-ji rotates and harmonizes in his works. And he wishes a country to have reign of peace with ending a year. Dong-ji has an old custom that eating a rice and adzuki-bean porridge in a temperance in eating manner. He put a stress on preparing future life before beginning a year. Moreover, it has been shown that he try hard with enthusiasm for study.
Suk-jun-il and Nap-il are customs related with memorial ceremony. For first, Suk-jun il is a day of Suk-jun-je, when memorial ceremony for Gong-Ja is offered in Mun-tomb. This memorial ceremony starts on February and August in lunatic calendar. Kim In-Hu gives his devotion with virtue to memorial ceremony.
Nap-il is the third day after Dong-Ji. It is a day of memorial ceremony for ancestor, Jongmyo, and Sa-jik. It is noticeable that he has special affection for the people by showing human touch that he prays for a good harvest and joy, anger together with sorrow and pleasure with the people.
Literal statuses of poem of Seasonal Customs from Kim In-hu are on the below. First, he provides characters such as Yo-Sun․Mun-wang․Gong-ja, and he shows literature of Do with appearance of doctor of Do and Do-hak concept. Second, he improves literary value of his poem with various rhetorics and imagery such as expression of various emotion, comparison․contrast of color, figure of speech, and symbolism. Third, His psychological world aims to things such as patriotism, devotion, and leading of free and quiet life. It is similar to psychological world of confucian scholars in 16th century. Especially, he was interested in the people's customs and social conditions in his works. It means he is very concerned about the mind of the people and take a close look on lives of the people. It is highly appreciated that he conveyed all things from the concern and affection for the people as well as a realistic description of customs in his poems.
