Abstract
Music listening is the essential part which is unconsciously performed in the society as well as school education. As much, people encounter many opportunities to listen to music. However, it is doubt whether music listening is conducive to the growth of musical sense. The education field of music listening tends to be regarded as unimportant because people usually listen to the music without preparation.
Culture has the great influence on the emotion of the teenagers if they accept it in the adolescent period which is the time of personalty formation without any constraint. In this sense, school education is noteworthy because school plays the role of the footing for students, making them step forward to the society. Therefore, teachers should make an effort to do right education of art for helping students understand culture rightly. The education of music listening has remained in same education methods and forms for a long time. Many music teachers are still hesitant to accept new education way of music listening. However, since music is different from the subject like mathematics that has the fixed formula, many changes should be given while music education is being conducted in the class. This research attempted to do research for changing the stereotyped education method in order to encourage students to take an interest in music.
This research inquired into preceding researches through reviewing many books and academic papers. It tried to apply the 'Making music by Eliot' to the class. Music listening is not confined to listening activity, but it is extended into practice of music education based on the philosophy of Eliot. Eliot is a scholar who claimed practice oriented music education philosophy while criticizing the 'aesthetic music education philosophy' by Reamer. Eliot argued that music is a way of understanding other cultures around the world based on 'Multicultural education theory, in addition to 'Making music'. Investigating the theories of Eliot, music is in the process rather than result. This research combines Eliot's theoretical basis with the education of music listening. That is, music is not confined to the activity of listening. Various music activities can be performed with music listening at the same time. In addition, since multicultural music education theory accepts and comprehends the music of various races, it will help students deepen the love of their national music and recognize the identity and uniqueness of other races' music as well.
Currently, the importance of music education is on the decline in the education conditions of Korea due to the emphasis on the education for entrance examination. Researches on the new education methods are required in this situation. The repetitive process of trials and errors in applying education methods, which are different from existing methods, will contribute to the development of music education. Right experience in music education will be the foundation for the growth of the youth. It would be difficult for students to accomplish musical development independently. For the development and growth of students, teachers should provide students with the foundation of right experience. Therefore, self-examination or reflection of teachers who play a prominent role in the music education is required for the development of creative methods in music education.
