A Study on Adverb Clauses in Korean

Simple sentence system in Korean are included an embedded sentences and a conjoined sentence; the former indicates a sentence in which clauses are included as one of the components and the latter indicates a sentence in which more than two short sentences are connected, that is, the one clause is connected with the other clause with a connective ending. Conjoined sentences are semantically categorized into coordinated and subordinate. The former has symmetry as precedent clauses are equally connected with consequent sentences in syntactic and semantic meaning. However, subordinated sentences are considered as conjoined rather than coordinated while they have common things with adverb clauses semantically and syntactically.
Therefore, this study aims to examine the concepts of connotation and connection, and suggests that subordinated sentences have as a function of connotation and may be included in adverb clauses syntactically.
For the purpose of the study, this study consists of as follows:
Chapter 1 identifies the purposes and methods of the study, and examines precedent studies. And it presents necessity of studies on relation between precedent clauses and adverb ones of conjoined sentences that has attracted much attention in complex sentence system.
Chapter 2 analyses embedded sentences and conjoined sentences and identifies that there is a problem in system of adverbial ending that represents a mark in sdinu thatadverb clauses. And we examine the grounds precedent clauses are included in embedded sentences within limits of connotation and subordination, and suggest that subordinate conjoined sentences may be included in adverb clauses in a set-up of adverb clauses.
Chapter 3 sets up the ranges of adverb clauses centering on adverbial endings that are marks of adverb clauses. As a result of looking at semantic and syntactic features of subordinate conjoined sentences, we found that they have more common things with adverb clauses than coordinated ones. So we included subordinated conjoined sentences in adverb clauses of embedded sentences only with coordinate sentences left as conjoining.
Chapter 4 examines meaning of connotation adverb clauses have and classifies adverb clauses into sentence-modifying and component-modifying. In consideration that subordinate sentences have concept of connotation rather than conjunction, we suggest a complex sentence system by including it in sentence-modifying adverb clauses of embedded sentences. It is suggested that this study will be helpful in reorganizing classification system of complex sentences as the system can confirm locations of subordinate sentences and expand ranges of adverb clauses.
