Abstract
Gukak(Korean Traditional music) has been imbued in Korean people's life and sentiments as well as Korean history and tradition. It is a historic cultural heritage that implies important value as precious art more than any other traditional culture, containing joys and sorrows of Korean people. In this sense, the education of Gukak plays an important part in making people realize the superiority of our nation and giving people the sense of national consciousness through keeping the identity and spirits of Korean people. Therefore, the education of Gukak is a crucial task, which is required for school education. For the cultivation of professional Gukak musicians (Korean Traditional musicians) which can play a principal role in the distribution, succession and development of Gukak, Guksak education that is currently conducted in the Guksak high school needs to be examined and the meaning of Gukak education should be explored.
This research compared and analyzed the Gukak education of high schools, based on the development history of Gukak education institution and the 7th revised curriculum in order to examine whether the education course of Gukak high school is appropriately applied. This research depends on literature reviews and Internet search as a research method, and confines the study in the common curriculum and specialized curriculum of high school.
Research investigated that the 7th curriculum of Gukak high school was applied to the education of arts high school. Both Gukak education and the western music were equally treated in the education. Gukak related contents were found in the music theory, music history, and music-listening, but they were not included in other subjects.
The contents of high schools were compared. The education of each school was consistent with the contents, which are presented by the 7th revised curriculum. However, the case that the real education of high school was not consistent with the contents of 7th curriculum was found in the research. It shows that the education course for Gukak specialized high school is required.
As an author of this thesis, I expect that this research would be conducive to the Gukak education institution in composing Gukak curriculum.
