This study focuses on comparison of possessive passive between Japanese and Korean which is representative one of sub-types of passives in an aspect of morphological construction. For the study, it examined sub-types of passive based on definitions and classifications of Japanese and Korean passives before making arguments on possessive passive in consideration that different opinions on placing of possessive passives between existing scholars. Based on the results, we analysed suggestions from previous studies on the subject and consider problems caused by placing the possessive passive.
And we compared Japanese possessive passive with Korean to make placing more definite and examine its features and differences to identify similarities and differences in construction and meaning between them.
For the purposes, we looked at what semantic and constructive features Korean possessive passive has and whether noun phrases of X and Z which are the whole and part in setting detailed types of Japanese possessive passive are inseparable. Then, we divided it into two types based on semantic correlations between X and Z noun phrases.
In case when X and Z noun phrases have inseparable meaning, the relation of Z to X is sub-categorized into「part」and「side」. In case when X and Z noun phrases are separable, they are sub-categorized into 「possessions」and「kinship」
In analysing the case when X and Z are inseparable and the case when X and Z are separable in terms of meaning, the former can be defined as being a direct passive sentence as the subject of the passive sentence is directly affected by movements or actions expressed by verbs. The latter can be defined as being like an indirect passive sentence as Z is directly affected by movements or actions expressed by verbs and the subject of the passive sentence is indirectly affected. For identification of specific meaning relations, this study discussed various semantic correlations between X and Z in two aspects: when the case that X is a compassionate noun and X is an incompassionate noun.
Then, we analysed Japanese and Korean possessive passives based on reviews on constructive and semantic aspects and found that the possessive passive of both countries have similarities in construction as seen in 「X (Ka)/ に(to)/ Zを(eul/reul)~passive verb」, when in examining constructive contents intensively, as possessive passives have both natures of direct passive and indirect passive, they exit in a boundary of the two passives and they are a little different according to placing of possessive passives.
This study identified similarities and difference in constructions through case analyses of Korean and Japanese possessive passives based on previous studies on definitions and systems of possessive passives of both countries.
