Teaching Music Appreciation according to J. Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development : Focusing for Grade 1 of Middle School

Today's music appreciation education is designed to expand possibility of individuals' esthetic experiences as far as can be, enhance quality of individual life, and help individuals represent their ideas and emotion, share and create various ethnic music cultures. However, the current music education does not. Therefore, this study is to enhance appreciation education based on the theory of cognitive psychology. The cognitive psychology deals with whether we have knowledge on environment and ourselves as we want, and how we use to perform daily tasks given. Human cognition in cognitive development of cognitive psychology is developed through interaction between environment and knowledge. Piaget categorized the theory human thinking develops, that is, developmental stages into four stages. Therefore, this study speculates music appreciation education targeting grade 1 of middle school students who are in formal operation period, and presents various teaching and leaning methods for more effective appreciation education that helps students deal with their adolescence through various activities and experiences.
