Abstract

Yeongunsiga means the poetry describing the love for kings. At this time, the love for kings were described in various emotional ways according to the conditions of speakers. However, previous studies have not paid attention to the general poetry. However, they identified poetry on love for kings as part of Sijo or Gasa without no organized classification on the poetry of the love, and considered the various representations of love for kings as simple. Therefore, this study describes the concept and range of the love poetry, expands the range of this genre to Hayangga and Gasa beyond the range of previous studies confined to Sijo and Gasa, and classifies the love poetry as Yeongun, Gyeonjeok, and Bohyo based on the『Chongjin』 by Kim Cheon-Taek as bibliographical data in order to find its characteristics. The key points of each chapter are presented as follows: Chapter Ⅰ identifies the purposes, subjects and method of the study based on the history of the research on it. As the subjects to look at have wide range, this study selects the ones which have definite themes of love for kings. And to approach to them in a perspective of the people at that time, this study uses the classification system of 『Chongjin』 by Kim Cheon-Taek. Chapter Ⅱ presents the concept and types of poetry describing love for kings. Yeongunsiga indicates the poetry describing the love for kings of the Korean poetry such as Hyangga, Goryeosokyo, Akjang, Sijo, and Gasa. At this time, the love for kings is defined as embracing all the diversified and complex emotions of speakers that are found in respect to kings. This study examines the characteristics of the poetry collected in Yeongun, Gyeonjeok, and Bohyo, a classification system based on the 『Chongjin』 by Kim Cheon-Taek, and differentiation of the three types. Based on the results, we reorganized the meanings of Yeongun, Gyeonjeok, and Bohyo according to the emotional attitudes of speakers in the poetry. Yeongunsiga describes distress of faithful subjects. In Gyeonjeoksiga, speakers who are realistically or psychologically severed from kings sing love for kings with tragic emotion. Finally, in Bohyosiga, speakers represent their gratitude to the benefits from kings. Chapter Ⅲ classifies the poetry of love for kings selected according to the three different types of Yeongunsiga and examines their characteristics. So, Yeongunsiga includes by Jeong Mong-Joo, by Shin Heum, and by Jeong Cheol; Gyeonjeoksiga includes by Shin Chung, by Jeong Seo, by Jang Gyeong-Se, by Yun Seon-Do, by Jo Woi, by Jo Woo-In, by Song Joo-Seok, by Kim Chun-Taek, by Lee Jin-You; Bohyosiga includes by Maengsasung, by the unknown, by Kim Gu, and by Shin Gye-Young. Chapter Ⅳ organizes the characteristics of the Yeongunsiga based on the results of the study. So it is found that Yeongun and Bohyo are mainly represented in Sijo and Gyeonjeok is mainly in Gasa. The love for kings in Yeongun and Bohyo can be fully represented in a simple form. However, as the love in Gyeonjeok is represented in more complicated way, it is more appropriate for longer form of Gasa with free style. And it is found that there were more Yeongunsigas in the early Joseon period, but more Gyeonjeoksigas in the late Joseon period, which means that confusing social atmosphere and collapse of feudalism at the late Joseon period caused change in recognition. ChapterⅤ suggests that further studies on Yeongunsiga should be actively developed based on the results of the study.
