- Abstract
- This study aims to expound on the concept of verb-preposition constructions and their characteristics in terms of semantics and pragmatics. Verb-preposition constructions are divided into five types as follows; verb + noun phrase + propositional phrase, verb + prepositional phrase + noun phrase, verb + intransitive prepositional phrase, verb + transitive prepositional phrase, and verb + prepositional phrase + noun phrase.
These classifications are based on Bas Aarts (2001) and three high school English textbooks, investigated to analyze their verb-preposition constructions.
Chapter 2 discusses different scholars' definitions of verb-preposition constructions and their types. Verb-preposition constructions are combinations of verbs and prepositional phrases, which are different from adverbs or prepositions. Though there are many different views on types of verb-preposition constructions, this study is limited to five types which are categorized by Passivization, Insertion of Adverb Phrase, and Preposition Shift tests.
Chapter 3 deals with verb-preposition constructions in terms of semantic and pragmatic features. The meaning of the verb-preposition construction depends on the contribution of prepositional phrases. Literal meaning is likely to derive from a mixture of the verb and prepositional phrase(s). Semi-idiomatic meaning derives from prepositional phrases which play a dominant role in exaggerating the verb. Idiomatic meaning is harder to decode than any other meaning type since it consists of figurative meaning beyond the meaning of the constituent words.
Lastly, Chapter 4 describes the pragmatic factors related to verb-preposition constructions. Verb-preposition constructions usually have productivity. Also, they have primary stress on the particle, while free combinations have stress on their verb. This can be explained by the end-weight maxim.
The appendix includes surveys of three first-year high school textbooks. The first book (Kyohaksa, 2003) has total 135 verb-preposition constructions. Another (Case, 2001) contains 130 verb-preposition constructions. The third (Neungyule, 2002) uses verb-preposition constructions 196 times. The results show that these books prefer Type 3 to Type 2, and disfavor Type 4 verb-preposition constructions.
