Abstract
This study is to identify the educational value of 'Jeon' literature of Jeoseon period which describe social and human aspects of the time. It points to limits of the novels that have been used as current educational materials of ancient novels and presents novels with various viewpoints on that time to help learners to have experiences in various aspects.
As mentioned above, in the late Jeoseon period, a status system collapsed due to social and economic changes, and active operation of petty officials and the common people brought the class of literature to be expanded. The gentry who was previously in charge of literature began to be interested in life of men in the street and reflected them in literature. So, painters, poor people, musicians, interpreters, street knights, medical officers, beggars, wives of charcoal dealers, and swindlers who showed new literary value were introduced as materials of literature.
Park Ji-Won is a representative writer at that time. 18 kinds of literary textbooks including a national Korean textbook tend to publish novels by a specific writer named Park Ji-Won. As creation of 'Jeon' literature in late Joseon Period was developed by many writers in addition to Park Ji-Won, it is thought that we need active acceptance and reflection on other 'Jeon' writers at that time. This study speculates novels by Lee Ok and Kim Ryeo based on 'Jeon' literature to expand the educational foundation of ancient novels. The results of the study are summarized as follows:
First, chapter 2 focuses on liberal characteristics of 'Jeon' literature for teaching and learning historical background of the later Joseon period through novels.
Second, chapter 3 analyses aspects of publishing ancient novels in literary textbooks in the 7th Curriculum, status of decision on unit lessons of each textbook, and relations with content system in curriculum to point to the problems of biased collection of novels written only by a single writer named Park Ji-Won.
Finally, to overcome the problems mentioned above, we compare the novels by Lee Ok and Kim Ryeo with those by Park Ji-Won which are published in textbooks as the former's novels are extensively being recognized in educational circles because of a process of internalization obtained by providing diversified experiences for learners. Then, we identify their succession and development, necessity of novels by Lee Ok and Kim Ryeo to be published in textbooks, their educational effects as follows:
First, as subjects to be introduced to a genre of 'Jeon' increases due to 'Jeon' by two writers, learners can have better understanding on diversified life. In respect to the introduction ceremony, the two different groups show distinctive difference. Lee Ok and Kim Ryeo recognized and pursued positive and characteristics life styles and social views. Through human instincts or psychological conflicts various characters show, learners can form chemistry with others, consider them and have opportunities to think about their directions to harmonize with others.
Second, through views on reality of the two groups, learners can enhance their sense to understand history. Though novels by Park Ji-Won described different themes in changed historical background of that time, they could not escape from consciousness of the gentry. However, Lee Ok and Kim Ryeo provided meaning for space of the street and recognized values of the characters in it with warm heart. When learners read novels by both the two groups equally, they can understand the relations between literature and society, and have balanced and gentle viewpoints on reality.
Third, the novels which deal with professionals help learners develop right concepts on people and enhance their mind on job and summons through self-realization. They evaluate self-esteem and confidence of professionals presented through the viewpoints of Lee Ok and Kim Ryeo and use them for models of their sound self-realization to identify the meaning of professionalism. Further, they can induce positive actions to achieve satisfaction and achievements.
This study suggests that 'Jeon' literature by Lee Ok and Kim Ryeo helps learners have interests in novels and obtain lessons, and can expand an educational frame by contributing to achievement of ultimate educational goals of ancient novels.
