This study investigate the relationship between economical change and the development of Amateur Boxing in Korea. The periodical scope for collection of data was over half century from 1945 to 2000. And also the scope of organizational level was formal sport organization of Boxing. The collected data were analyzed using matching or differentiating method(Mill, 1969), contrasting the situation and finding the macro causal chain methods (Skocpol, 1980). After selecting the indicators for economical development of Amateur Boxing in Korea and analyzing the data, the following conclusions were obtained:
First, with the promotion of economic development, boxing clubs were formed at national enterprises and public schools and they made a great contribution to the activation of amateur boxing, and athletes’ morale was heightened by “the annual salary system” and other incentives. With these efforts, amateur boxing continued its development until 1988, but from that time on it began to decline as leisure sports were popularized and people’s sentiment on boxing was changed. What is more, amateur boxing became gradually inactive as people came to avoid difficult works and various new sports developed rapidly during the period of economic expansion.
Second, the number of amateur boxers increased significantly during the period of active economic growth in Korea. However, from the peak in 1987 when there were 3.595 amateur boxers, the number decreased to 2,147 in 1991 and 1,824 in 1997. In terms of medals won in the Asian Games, 24 gold medals were won in the 1980s but only 2 in the 1990s, and 3 gold medals were won in the Olympic Games during the 1980s. This shows that the 1980s was the golden days of amateur boxing in Korea.
For continuous development of amateur boxing in Korea, the base of boxing should be expanded and facilities should be extended through ample investments. In the past people became boxers out of their wish, but these days violent boxing games are often avoided by people. Thus, it is necessary to improve systems related to boxing, and to transfer the role of boxing promotion from boxing training centers to schools in order to find talented athletes early.
In concert with social trends, boxing needs to develop systematic programs applicable in people’s everyday life and to harmonize its characteristics as a martial art and as a sport.
