Every language has its own unique properties to be distinguished from other languages and common features. Language is by-product of its users' custom and each country has word order of language. Greenberg (1966) shows that although relation among linguistic characteristics is not always depending on basic word order, universality of language has statistical correlation with basic word order and grammatical characteristics.
While factors deciding word order of English are objective and grammatical combinations of adjacent components such as transitive verb and object, adverb and adjective, adjective and noun, auxiliary verb and negative adverb, subjective intimate relation also has a great influence on word order. Typical word order principles include 'Nearest comes first' principle by Johnson & Lakoff (1980), 'Me-First' principle by Ross (1982) and 'Word order by distance or weight' by Park Nam Sik (1985, 1989) and according to these principles, factors combined closely centering around speaker and hearer have word order decided by the degree of intimacy between speaker and hearer. In particular, word order of binomials shows psychologically close relationship between speaker and hearer clearly.
According to word order of binomials with fixed word order, those having meaning of two components show fixed word order depending on intimacy and free word order has fixed use, but change of its use is based on intimacy relation first.
This study focuses on subjective and mental sides in word order of English, analyzes correlations among adjacent components, examines word order determinants and investigates factors affecting word order decision in binomials or parallel expression with relatively free word order.
This study consists of the following.
Chapter 1 describes introduction and chapter 2 investigates theoretical background of word order and analyzes word order determinants. Chapter 3 examines word orders of binomials by dividing them into word order of behavioral process, that of number, up and down-strong and weak word order, positive-negative word order, compulsory-incidental word order and near-distant word order and reviews limitations found in examining these word orders. Chapter 4 examines and analyzes binomial structure in English subject of the 7th curriculum with a view to help students understand word order of English with more systematic and efficient explanations based on the contents of chapter 3.
