Abstract

A Study on the Aspect of Camouflage in Women Hero novels

This study aims to identify the reason, aspect and meaning of women's wearing of men's cloth, that is, camouflage, in women hero novels which were in vogue in late Joseon Period. Appearance and prevalence of women hero novels at the time when existing sense of value collided with a new sense of value have significant meaning beyond appearance of female heroes. Their wearing men's cloth is a behavior to hide their status and a means to achieve their desires. Therefore, the camouflage is related to a superficial reason to hide their status and an inherent reason as a means to live with firm will as women. The camouflage aspects include hiding status, maintaining the camouflage and returning to existing status. To examine the aspects of camouflage in women hero novels, this study identifies their epic structures. By keeping in mind that camouflage, return, and marriage that were not generally shown in usual hero novels appear only in women hero novels, this study selects representative 13 novels. It separates the novels according to whether the reasons of camouflage rely on themselves or others to decide epic paragraphs. In case that camouflage is caused by others, ordeals due to problems in marriage appear, that is, the heroes are married with persons with same sex after they have help from finances or saviors. The reasons of camouflage include compelling marriage, personal danger, revenge, gaining fame, and intention of parents. They can be confirmed through individual novels such as ,,, and . However, as there is no such paragraph in case a camouflage is done by one's own will, it is not typical, and in conclusion, it provides heroic aspects and independency for female heroes. The camouflage by women's own will is done by women's will of self-realization and longing for men's sense of value, which are shown in and . However, the process to return to existing status after active activity, to return to women, is separated into voluntary return and compelling return according to whether the return is voluntary or compelling. Voluntary return is not significantly related to whether the reason of the return is voluntary or compelling. Though the camouflage is done by others' intention, if their ability is recognized through the camouflage and the heroes intend to control their life voluntarily, voluntary return does not occur. It is confirmedthrough,andwhichdealwithcompellingreturninspiteofthecamouflagdonebyothers'intention.Inand , voluntary camouflage and compelling return appear. Through diversified types of camouflage and return process, we can understand the return process and meaning of the women hero novels. Appearance of women heros at the time when personal status collapsed and market economy activates means women are awakened. That is, it presented a question on patriarchical suppression, revealed worries and ordeals of women, and prepared a foundation of discussion on equality of both sexes at the time when functions of both sexes were definitely separated. Women heroes had to have men's appearance to achieve their individual desire of self-realization, which is shown as a form of camouflage. It means that women pursued equal opportunities, focusing on their own problem. In this aspect, the camouflage in the women's hero novels has a significant meaning and we need further and intensive research on it.
