Abstract

This paper is to discuss oedipal approach to Herzog's personalities in Herzog. Saul Bellow is one of the most intellectual Jewish writers in American literature and won the Novel Prize in literature in 1976. Most of Bellow's novels reveal his male angel of binary oppositions between men and women. And because Bellow focuses on a well-defined male protagonist, it is only natural that most critical evaluations of his works concentrate on that character. Critics still do not adequately acknowledge their personalities. One of the most distinguished characteristics which Saul Bellow suggests is that most protagonist's pains and conflicts come from the betrayals, desperation and anger of women and friend. Bellow describes some personalities of Herzog through the relationship between Herzog and women. Herzog's continuing relationships with women from Daisy to Madeleine to Ramona symbolize from oedipal personality of Herzog to the process of establishment of ideal vision of women. Herzog appears to have emerged successfully from the crisis. By acting out his rage and desire for revenge, he has released himself from the worst of it. He finely sees Madeleine again and feels he gets the better of her. He has begun the process of detaching himself from Madeleine and Gersbach by seeing them as ludicrous figures. His temporary isolation has given him some peace of mind, but recovery from grief does not necessarily constitute a transformation of personality. Herzog may still be neurotic, but he has learned something from having survived his crisis of grief. The pain of grief is just a part of life as the joy of love; it is ,perhaps, the price we pay for love, the cost of commitment. Herzog's ability to grieve deeply is testimony to his power to love deeply, the power that makes him and all of us human.
