- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the necessity of teaching and learning the target culture in the language classroom and to devise how to teach and learn some of the elements of English culture in the EFL classroom through several mobile and internet services.
A language reflects various elements of its society such as education, economy, and culture. Generally, appropriateness of language use can be determined by each speech community, that is, by the shared social and cultural conventions of the speakers. So it is essential to recognize different sets of culturally determined rules in communication. They will help learners understand and use the target language in appropriate contexts.
Students who want to speak English should know culturally appropriate expressions of English as well as the sociocultural sides of the English-speaking societies.
The 7th curriculum of the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development of Korea emphasizes the importance of learning foreign cultures in language classrooms. It is true that the best way to learn English with its culture is to live in an English-speaking society. However, Korean students have been learning English in the EFL situation. Most Korean learners and teachers of English have depended only on English textbooks to learn the cultural elements of English.
The methods of teaching and learning English through some devices of information and communication technology will be of great help to the students who want to learn English with its cultural elements.
