Abstract

Biography is categorized into four types as follows: historical biography, family biography(家傳), describing biography(托傳), and hereditary biography(假傳). It started from a historical biography that described real achievements of Samachon and was developed in a good order of family biography(家傳), describing biography(托傳) and hereditary biography(假傳). The hereditary biography was created by literary persons of Goryeo period who experienced struggles of military persons. Its beginning was 〈Gooksunjeon〉 by Im Chun. Then Lee Gyu-bo created 〈Gookseonsangjeon〉 influenced by 〈Gooksunjeon〉. They have a common thing in that they personified alcoholic drinks. 〈Gooksunjeon〉 that was written by Im Chun in the middle of Goryeo period parodied wicked government officials through history of drinks and the rise and fall. It is a parodic and purposeful work which criticized groups who were indulged in drinks and pleasure and punished those who flattered to win patronage of the king and exercised the power. 〈Gooksunsaengjeon〉 by Lee Gyu-bo personified drinks to educate fidelity to the people and present how to behave of true gentlemen. Mr. Gooksunsaeng was loved and appointed as a government official because of his sincerity even though he was from the lower family, and exercised power but was expelled and reflected himself. He was not arrogant and kept his place, which emphasized social education. Common characters appear in the two works. They are real persons as follows: Seomak in Seomak narrative and Juklimchihyeon. However, 〈Gooksunjeon〉 describes heroes as negative and 〈Gooksunsaengjeon〉 described them positive. The background of the two works is China. They are roughly composed of three parts. The final part deals with subjective viewpoint of the author and summarized and reviewed the whole story, in which a theme was revealed. 〈Gooksunjeon〉 and 〈Gooksusangjeon〉 deserve to be noticed in that they provided a series of lineage for composition of work by personifying drinks. 〈Gooksunjeon〉 takes an important position in the history of Korean novels. It has a firm position as a novel in creative composition beyond the existing expressive method of narratives or legends. It pinpointed defects of humanity, unreasonableness and contradiction of society, advocated social justice and attempted to write parody, which was a reform in the history of Korean novels.
