Abstract
This research is designed to test and compare the impact of association activities using fantastic fairy tales on young children’s development of creativity, and based on this, come up with methods of teaching and learning to promote children’s creativity in kindergarten education. To this end, this research set research questions as follows.
1. Do association activities using fantastic fairy tales affect young children’s creativity development?
1-1. Do association activities using fantastic fairy tales affect young children’s fluency development?
1-2. Do association activities using fantastic fairy tales affect young children’s development of flexibility development?
1-3. Do association activities using fantastic fairy tales affect young children’s originality development?
1-4. Do association activities using fantastic fairy tales affect young children’s imagination development?
2. Do association activities using fantastic fairy tales make a difference four to five year old young children’s creativity development?
For this research, 60 4- and 5-year-old children who go to J kindergarten located in Gwangju Metropolitan City were selected as research subjects and divided into 30 experimental groups and 30 comparison groups. Experimental groups participated in association activities using fantastic fairy tales 12 times between September 5, 2005 and October 14, 2005, and comparison groups participated in general life theme-centered education process.
Test tools to study young children’s creativity used Jeon Kyeong-won (1999)’s Korean Comprehensive Creativity Test for Young Children (K-CCTYC, revised version, 1999), and measured fluency, flexibility, originality and imagination as main factors.
With regard to data collected for this research, in order to test the difference between groups, t-test and ANCOVA were performed. SPSSWIN 12.0 statistics program was used.
The results of this research are as follows.
First, they showed that there was a significant difference experimental groups which participated in association activities using fantastic fairy tales and comparison groups which participated in general life theme-centered education process. That is to say, it was observed that association activities using fantastic fairy tales was effective in fluency, flexibility, originality and imagination, that is, young children’s creative factors.
Second, association activities using fantastic fairy tales made no significant difference in 4- and 5-year-old children’s development of creativity. That is to say, it was confirmed that association activities using fantastic fairy tales had a positive impact on 4- and 5-year-old children, but there was no significant difference in effectiveness between ages.
