- Abstract
- The is a fiction that describes achievements of fictional Mrs. Park's life on the background of Byeongjahoran. Mrs. Park, a heroine, overcomes conflicts in her family due to her ugly appearance with her mystical ability and transformation and resisted against shameful surrender in Byeongjahoran through heroic activities.
This study speculates background, developmental aspects and themes of the novel to identify general literary property of the and to abstract its value as literature education based on the results of previous studies.
First, the was written after Byeongjahoran, after all the actual persons living at that time disappeared. It accused contradiction of patriarchical family system and conceptual belittlement of female ability. It is thought that it was written in middle of the 18th century in that it implies an intentional desire to be awakened on women and to promote re-acknowledgement of women. In consideration that the author has an ability to create a novel, the novel does not reflect living and mind of the common people at all, and a woman has progressive thought with strong self-consciousness, the author is believed to be a woman from noble class. It is confirmed that includes various narratives.
Second, in respect to developmental process, the is divided into family story and national salvation. The family story, the first half, deals with conflicts in family because of Mrs. Park's ugly appearance. Mrs. Park solved conflicts through mystical ability and transformation. The national salvation story, the last half, deals with conflicts between Mrs. Park and powerful families in Byeongjahoran period. Mrs. Park defeated Kihongdae and Yonggoldae brothers, which is a partial indemnity against miserable defeat in Byeongjahoran.
Third, in respect to themes, the represents recovery of national confidence and mind of modern women. In historical aspect, it reconsiders historic heroes in the and actual situation of the battle. It discloses powerless politics and social status at that time while it provides spiritual victory through Mrs. Park's ability following national desire to purify shame of the defeat. That a woman participates in political affairs at the time when women were considered as inanimate objects and overcame national crisis provides a great meaning to roles of women. It highlights the sense of modern women which is differentiated from that of traditional women and self-consciousness.
Finally, this study confirmed that the has literature educational value, in which national desires to overcome defeat at Byeongjahoran and growth of modern women's mind are shown through victorious actions of a heroine. It also confirmed that in order to prepare a ground on which fictional character and characteristics of the can be learned perfectly through speculation on literature textbooks with literature educational value, we have to provide exact information on this work and make the balanced reference of the work.
Based on the speculation above, the is designed to overcome a national disaster named 'Byeongjahoran' and cure hurts from shameful surrender. In particular, Mrs. Park's heroic activities have a great meaning in that it is intended to show intentional awakening and express female emotion to escape from the Confucian conventions, not only desiring to overcome a national disaster named 'Byeongjahoran' and shameful surrender to the enemy.
