Abstract
This study aims to prepare basic information on writing of Korean fairy tales by comparing Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and Korean-language foreign ones according to educational goals, genre, types of disabilities, themes, materials, description of heroes, and gender of heroes.
For the purpose, the following questions are prepared:
1) What difference in educational goals is there between Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and foreign ones ?
2) What difference in genres is there between Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and foreign ones ?
3) What difference in types of disabilities is there between Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and foreign ones ?
4) What difference in themes is there between Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and foreign ones ?
5) What difference in materials is there between Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and foreign ones ?
6) What difference in description of heroes is there between Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and foreign ones ?
7) What difference in gender of heroes is there between Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities and foreign ones ?
This study selects 14 Korean fairy tales relating to disabilities abstracted from a thesis presented by Kim, Hee-kyong(2003) for a comparative analysis with 14 foreign ones, and targets four students who are majoring in Child Studies, three kindergarten teachers working in Gwangju city, one elementary school teacher, and two middle school teachers teaching Korean. According to the Table Ⅲ-3, this study compares and analyses their respondence.
The results of this study in each question is presented as follows:
1) In respect to analytical conclusion according to educational goals in kindergarten, a comparative thesis shows that fairy tales relating to disability are not introduced in home study, and this study demonstrates that disability fairy tales are evenly distributed and sometimes, two or three stories are repetitively introduced.
2) In respect to genres of fairy tales, the comparative thesis shows that there are 10(71.4%) of creative fairy tales and this study demonstrates that there is 14 (10%) of creative fairy tales and no traditional fairy tales.
3) In respect to disabilities of heroes, both the comparative thesis and this study show that the number of fairy tales which deal with crippled children and visually-disabled children is the most. So, infants can have interest in the surroundings and daily actions through literary works and the stories are composed to attract children's interest and help their understanding. fairy tales relating to disabilities
4) In respect to themes of fairy tales, the comparative shows that 13 stories are designed for trouble-shooting( 26%), and this study shows that most of them are designed for trouble-shooting. So, it is inferred that infants who have self-centered thinking and independence can overcome disabilities wisely through interesting fairy tales which are designed to reinforce children's trouble-shooting ability by input of indirect experience in solving problems.
5) As a result of analysis according to materials, for a thesis on Korea disability (Kim Hee-gyeong, 2003), it is found that most of the tales deal with realities of life (66.7%), while in this study, there are five tales (35.7%) on personification of animals and plants and realities, three on fantasy (21.4%) and one on personification of nature (7.2%).
6) In respect to description of heroes, Kim Hee-gyeong's thesis shows that there are four tales on siblings (23.4%), and this study shows that there are six tales in which animals are the heroes, which is the highest rate (42.9%).
For characters of the heroes, it is found that the stories mainly deal with characters focusing on living habits and attitudes of children. Specifically, both the comparative thesis and this study show that most of the tales deal with will power.
7) For gender of heroes, of 14 tales presented in Kim Hee-gyeong's thesis, the heroes of the 10 tales are male (66.7%) while this study shows that the heroes of seven tales are male (50%. In conclusion, the number of the tales whose heroes are male are three times more than the number of those whose heroes are female. It may cause children to have a fixed concept of gender role. However, as more male characters appear than female ones in the tales, it may cause children to have a misunderstanding that males have superiority to females. So we should be more careful in writing fairy tales
