- Abstract
- In this thesis, the aspects of death are studied in Korean classic novels. Literature reflects the lives. So, the death is the popular subject matter among the various kinds of human matters in the novels. There are three kinds of aspects of death according to the ways of processes leading to death, and then how the revive.
The first aspect of death is to be revive as the same before death and continue to live. This is realized by the order from the heavens, the miracle drug and the sensation of the hero's true heart. These are reflected well in Kim-Hack-Gong-Geon and Wang-Rang-Ban-Hon-Geon.
The second aspect of death is to separate the soul and body, and then be revive and transform into other people or stick to them. He revived either a human being, animal, plant, or mineral like rocks. In korean classic novels, it is common to be revived to the other as in Sam-Saeng-Rok and Sam-Sa-Hoing-Ib-Hwang-Cheon-Gi.
The third aspects of death is to be revived into either a wizard or a ghost. This is the quite different from the first and the second. At the first, rebirth is to return to oneself. Second, rebirth is to come to life again as the other creature. But the third is resurrection; which is to bring the life of the soul to the form of a wizard or a ghost. This is reflected well in Sook-Young-Nang-Ja-Geon and Yoo-Moon-Seong-Geon.
In this novel, death has the meaning of the discontinuance of the self-realization, and to solve this, it is necessary to revive. At the tip of suffering, the hero has died and death is transformed in heaven and he revives and enters a new self-realization. This thesis studies death and classifies it into three aspects of rebirth. Further the study on death must be done integrative and profoundly not only in Korean classic novels, but also in native songs and the Korean ode.
