Abstract
The effects of heating effluents produced by the Taean Thermoelectric Power Plant on the intertidal invertebrate community in the adjacent rocky coast were studied in 2000, 2002, and 2004. About 70 species of intertidal invertebrates were found from two study stations in every three study years. The invertebrate community between the station near the heating effluent waterway and the control station showed no remarkable differences in the respect of the number of species occurred and the species composition. However, heating effluents had a tendency to effect positively on the increase of intertidal invertebrate biomass, especially in winter season. Diversity indices of the invertebrate community near the effluent waterway were more or less varied than those at the control station according to the seasonal surveying time and the tidal level. These results suggest that the effects of heating effluents on the intertidal invertebrate community are existed but it is not so strong to change the fundamental structure of the community. It is also revealed that heating effluents may not effect negatively on the intertidal invertebrate community in the study area. On the contrary, it nearly does effect positively on the community in increasing the biomass by promoting the growth of populations.
