Abstract
This paper examines English teaching techniques used to enhance communicative competence among elementary school students. It also examines some effects of speaking instruction on those students. First, this paper examines the theoretical background of communicative competence studied by Chomsky, Hymes, Halliday, Canale & Swain. Second, the following teaching activities to improve students' communicative competence are presented: songs, chant, games, role-plays and storytelling. They are to provide an interesting experience to language learners and thus keep the classroom atmosphere active and variable. In class, the focus of English teaching must be changed to a learner-centered model from a teacher-centered one. The teacher stimulates learners' motivation and encourages students to participate actively in language activity. Sustaining the learner's interest is important in communicative elementary English. Finally, this study examines several actual sample lessons to improve the students' communicative competence in communicative elementary English. These teaching techniques consider elementary school student's characteristics and the English curriculum in communicative elementary English. It is concluded that English teaching techniques should be further developed to improve the students' communicative competence in the future.
