Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present some solutions to the difficulties that many Korean students may often encounter when they use the internet chat tools for English learning. The internet has been used as an effective media to improve the communicative competence of English learners. English is the most important language on the internet that offers the most recent, useful and extensive information. Everyday on the internet we exchange e-mails, surf for information, communicate with other people, and read news around the world. One of the most interactive and communicative functions of the internet is the internet relay chat (IRC) which has been used for world-wide communication in English. There are several IRC tools which we can use to chat with people in other countries and time zones. They reveal the internet to be a very useful media of communication. However, they also reveal some problems and limitations when we use them to learn English. Some of the major problems are the lack of the learners' basic ability to communicate in English, the learners' different levels of learning English, and the learners' fearsome attitudes to chatting. This thesis tries to present how to use IRC tools for the purpose of English learning and how to solve the difficulties in using the IRC tools for that purpose. Chapter Ⅰ of this thesis states the purpose and necessity, the methods and limitations of the study. Chapter Ⅱ deals with educational theories for using internet chatting. Chapter III introduces some useful sites for chat and how to use them effectively for English learning. Chapter IV presents some solutions to the difficulties which learners often encounter when they chat in English on the internet. Chapter V draws the conclusion of the study and makes some suggestions
