Abstract
In response to the changes in society, the educational world has also experienced changes and improvements. Whenever there was any change in the national curriculum, the background of editing textbooks or the direction of developing them was modified or changed to meet the social needs of the times. Despite such social changes and needs, however, our mathematics textbooks have been often criticized for showing no sufficient change in the structure or method of describing their contents. It would be a driving force in normalizing school education and at the same time promoting an education reform to see if the learner-oriented mathematics textbooks based on the updated seventh curriculum show any change that could dismiss such criticism.
Accordingly, among many changes made in the newly compiled textbooks, this study analyzes the introduction activities of each chapter that are to guide the direction of instruction. First of all, the study looked over the seventh curriculum and the basic direction of textbook selection and made an analysis of whether the newly compiled textbooks offer introduction activities that properly reflect the intention of the seventh curriculum considered as a student-oriented curriculum and the basic direction of textbook compilation.
Based on the findings of this study, the unit introduction should be in an attempt to inspire learning motivation in students. It should not just end up in a perfunctory approach to apply a mathematical model to our living surroundings or to use manipulatives as means of bridging between students' specific learning environment and the abstract level of mathematics. Therefore, we need to attempt various approaches to the development of instruction materials suitable for the current developmental level of students and develop various subject matters through curriculum experts' case studies about mathematics textbooks from foreign countries, so that hopefully we can have opportunities to take advantage of those approaches and subject matters in class.
