Abstract

This study aims to examine theme styles of Chinese poetry collected in the Korean Version of the『Songgangjib』for intensive understanding of Jeong Chul's Chinese Poetry. For the purpose, this study creates an analysis table of the theme styles in his Chinese poetry, and examines properties of Song-gang's Chinese poetry and their meaning in literary history. And then, it classifies what is to be discussed in this study into four steps, focusing on the theme styles: First, to identify the ideological background of Song-gang's poetry, this study investigates his life and companionship. Song-gang had a tough time when he was young because of his father's exile. When his father was released from his exile, his life was finally settled in Changpyeong, where he was taught by scholars in Honam area and most of his poetry was written at this time. His ideology was influenced by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. He was worried about Confucian and Buddhistic viewpoints on humans, and when he diverted to Taoism, he achieved mental stability and comfort. Second, this study intends to make a basic frame to understand theme styles in his Chinese poetry. Based on 572 Chinese poems collected in the Korean Version of the『Songgangjib』published by the ‘Songgang Heritage Preservation Association’, this study classifies them into four parts according to themes: 「Friends「Natural Beauty「Meditation and Sentimentsand「Yearning for the Loved And they are classified into sub-categories for intensive research. As a result of it, 202 poems (35%) are connected to friends; 162 (28%) on natural beauty; 120(21%) on meditation and sentiments; and 88(15%) on yearning after the king. When the poetry is examined through the analysis table of theme styles, it is mainly involved in friendship. He expresses his sentiments based on his common experiences. For「Natural Beautyhe sings nature while he stays in reality. In respect to「Meditation and Sentimentshe describes personal affairs, especially, how he felt when he was exiled, suffering from disease and self-retrospection. For「Yearning after the lovedhe represents his conflicts and isolation when he, who is very real and practical, retired from the governmental position in order to express serious yearning after the king more intensively. Third, this study classifies the properties of his poetry into improvision, sentimental mood, and emotionalism. Most of his poems are not elaborated or rhetorically flourished. Through his poems on political frustration, isolation, anxiety about mortality and separation with friends, his emotion and sentiments appear. Finally, in respect to ‘ Meaning of Song-gang's Poetry in Literary History’, this study was supported from reviews of other authors. Song-gang is recognized as a poet who has natural sentiments, intrepid patriotism, and yearning after the king. It indicates that his Chinese poetry as well as his Korean literature has been given much attention from many people since the mid-Joseon period. Thus, this study has a limitation in that it targets only Song-gang's Chinese poetry; especially, 572 of the 763 Chinese poem. In the future, more research is needed to identify a correlation between his Korean poetry and Chinese poetry and then we can understand aesthetics of Song-gang's Chinese poetry more effectively. For the effective explanation of Song-gang's literature, both Korean and Chinese poetry should be comprehensively studied.
