Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of art programs which use picture books and famous paintings.
The research questions included the following :
1. Do picture book art program and famous painting art program affect art appreciation ability?
2. Do picture book art program and famous painting art program affect artistic expression ability?
The subjects of this study were 60 four to five-year-old children who were sampled from three kindergartens in Gwangju(20 children in experimental group 1, 20 children in experimental group 2, and 20 children in control group). The children in the three groups involved in the experiment were made to act for seven weeks in different ways. Experimental group 1 performed an art program using picture books. Experimental group 2 performed an art program using famous paintings. Control group performed a traditional art program based on expression activities which had generally done in kindergarten. All three classes conducted posttest about art ability(art appreciation ability and artistic expression ability) after pretest and seven weeks experimental treatment for seven weeks.
SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 10.0 computer program was employed for the data analysis. In order to examine the differences of young children's art ability, experimental group 1 and experimental group 2 and control group were analyzed by covariance analysis (ANCOVA) using the scores of pre-test as covariance.
The results of this study were as follows.
1. The picture book art program and famous painting art program had an effect on children's art appreciation ability. In art appreciation ability, it was shown that experimental group 1 that participated in a picture book art program was the most effective, the control group was the least. Specifically, there were improvements in the explanation of the impression, expressive technique, finding of aesthetic elements, and making title for the work.
2. The picture book art program and famous painting art program had an effect on children's artistic expression ability. In artistic expression ability, it was shown that experimental group 1 that participated in picture book art program was the most effective, and control group was the least. Specifically, there were improvements in creative expression of the theme, detailed representation of the subjected matters, construction of scene, and creative power.
These results showed that picture book art program and famous painting art program affected young children's art ability more positively than a traditional art program. In particular, picture book art program showed a high educational effectiveness.
