Abstract

People use euphemism extensively to reduce the psychological burden without hurting the other person's feelings, but it depends on the situation. The euphemistic expression is a universal language phenomenon of mankind and is an expression recognized as one of language etiquette in modern times, which has been born under the social and cultural influence for a long time. The object of this research is the euphemism relating to the taboo expression of two countries and the euphemistic expression that is frequently used in daily life. This studies emphasis the euphemistic expression related to the body, psychology and human beings in term of the contents and classification of euphemistic expression. For accurate and understanding, the cases mentioned mainly refer to dictionaries, books, internet materials, current affairs and other materials that people used frequently in daily life. Based on these insights, the similaries and difference of euphemistic expression between Chinese and Korean are compared and analysed. This study is divided into five chapters. In chapter 1, the purpose and necessity are putting forward. Meanwhile, the results of prior studies are discussed, and the object and methods of this study are also presented. Chapter 2 explained the concept and characteristics of the euphemistic expression based on prior studies. Moreover, it explains the classification basis of the euphemistic expression and reclassification it again. Furthermore, relatioinship of euphemistic expression and taboo phenomenon are presented. In chapter 3, the physical and psychological aspects of euphemistic expression in Korean and Chines are illustrated through related examples. Specifically, the physical aspects are divided into death, physical disorders, sex, physiological phenomenon and psychological aspects are classified according to dialogue and mental states. Chapter 4 relies on the analysis in Chapter 3 to reveal the similarities and differences between Korean and Chinese euphemistic expressions, and discuss the reasons related to their cultural background. In chapter 5, summarising the contents and opinions of this research, thus, pointing out the significance and the limitations of this research. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reclassify a large number of euphemistic expression frequently used in Korean and Chinese based on comparative linguistic analysis, which illustrates the similarities and differences between Korean and Chinese euphemistic expression. In particular, this sutdy focus on euphemistic expression related to body and psychology, which are common in any language settings. Since the euphemism is closely related to the social and cultural background of a particular society, this study not only contributes to the expression education as a form of language but also facilitate ot the cultural education in the future.
