- Abstract
- This papor is about a writer Sandang Choi Chung-Seong崔忠成’s Sandangjip山堂集, who is translated and annotated in hopes of better understanding his life and studies in Honam Province in Chosun Dynasty.
Choi Chung-Seong loved to study ever since he was a little boy. When he was an 8 year old, he and his older brother moved to the capital city of ChoSun, and began to study Sohak小學 under the master Kim Goeng-Pil金宏弼 whose classes were SimKyung心經․GeunSarok近思錄 that were focused on the deeper meaning of the Seongjeong性情 and Igi理氣.
He was a well-known scholar, whose textbook reciting never stopped, even in the severe winter season sitting in the cold room with no heat, hoping to remain awake. This caused him a severe health problem and eventual death. Choi Chung-Seong left his only writing, that shows the life and studies of the 15th century scholars which has a historical value. However, his writing has not had any attention due to his sudden and early death.
As a result there are no remarkable studies on his writing SanDangJip. However, it is a promising step that recently there are some selected studies and reports that are represented on his writing. SanDang Choi Chung-Seong has held my attention and study. Not only had he lived in my neighborhood, but also he was a fellow intelligent scholar in my proud Honam province.
Choi Chung-Seong was born in a noble family, but his parents passed away when he was a little boy so that he had been under his older brother’s care, living in a poor condition until, at age 8, he met a great teaching master Kim Goeng-Pil. It seems to us that Choi Chung-Seong was an irresponsible husband, father and a scholar away from his family, yet he clearly explained, in his writing, his belief and studies and how strongly he was motivated and determined.
We will look into Choi Chung-Seong’s motivation and determination that are written in his writing Sandangjip til his death at age 41.
