Abstract

This study verified the mediating effect of Attribution of Responsibility of university students on the relationships between rejection sensitivity and relational aggression. To examine this hypothesis, 290 male and female university students (N=290) completed the Rejection Sensitivity Scale (RSQ), Attribution of Responsibility Scale, Relational Aggression Scale(RAS) through an online survey on social networking services (SNS), The conclusions of the present study are thus summarized as follows: First, in the relationship between Rejection Sensitivity, Attribution of Responsibility, and Relational Aggression, Rejection Sensitivity was positively correlated with Attribution of Responsibility and Relational Aggression. Also, Attribution of Responsibility indicated a significant positive correlation to Relational Aggression. Second, Attribution of Responsibility mediated the relationship between Rejection Sensitivity and Relational Aggression. In other words, Rejection Sensitivity had not only a direct effect on Relational Aggression but also an indirect effect, by mediating the Attribution of Responsibility. The results of this study can help to gain a broader understanding of the mechanisms of Relational Aggression. In addition, these findings have clinical implications for therapeutic prevention and intervention of Relational Aggression, and suggest that Attribution of Responsibility as well as Rejection Sensitivity (i.e. an emotionally predisposing factor) should be considered as an important risk factor in the engagement of Relational Aggression. Limitations of the current study and recommendations for future research were discussed.
