20세기 후반 서구 남성 동성애 작품에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 20세기 후반의 서구 미술계에서 나타난 폭발적이고 집단적인 남성 동성애자 미술가들의 작업열기의 원인이 무엇이었는가에 대한 물음에서 출발하였다. 20세기 후반의 서구 남성 동성애자 작가들의 작품을 포스트모더니즘의 타자성 개념으로 분석함으로써 그들의 작품에 동성애자로서의 타자성이 어떻게 드러나는지, 그리고 이러한 양상들이 당시의 혁명적 분위기와 어떤 관련을 맺고 있었는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 타자들은 시시각각 변화하고 모습을 숨겨 ‘암호화’되고, 주체로서의 권리를 갖지 못하는 ‘소외된’ 존재이며, 기존의 고착화된 체계에 균열을 만들어 내기 때문에 ‘위협적’이다. 본 연구자는 이와 같은 ‘암호’, ‘소외’, ‘위협’이라는 타자성으로 동성애자 미술가들의 작품을 분석했다. 로버트 라우센버그와 재스퍼 존스, 앤디 워홀과 같은 미술가들은 검열을 피하기 위해 동성애자만이 알아챌 수 있는 상징을 작품 속에 은폐했다. 그들은 작품 속에 다양한 해석의 여지를 남겼고, ‘암호’라는 타자성이 나타났다. 1960년대 이후 프랜시스 베이컨과 데이비드 호크니의 경우에는 작품 속 공간을 통해 자신들의 타자성을 드러내었다. 이들의 공간에서는 사회의 부정적인 시선과 편견을 피해야만 비로소 자유로울 수 있는 소외적 특성을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 이후 로버트 메이플소프나 길버트와 조지 같은 미술가들은 특히 신체 이미지를 이용하여 근본적인 동성애 탄압 원인인 기독교를 공격했다. 이러한 작업은 기존의 권력 체계를 위협하는 것이라 볼 수 있다. 이와 같은 타자성의 양상은 당시 역사적 배경과 맞물려 점진적으로 변화하였다. 동성애자 미술가들의 공통적인 전언은 ‘자아의 인정’과 ‘동성애의 해방’이었다. 그리고 그 배경에는 근대적 사상의 붕괴와 포스트모더니즘의 대두, 그리고 젠더 개념의 등장이 있었다. 본 연구에서 젠더의 관점에서 본 타자성을 중심으로 동성애 미술에 접근한 것은 보다 다양한 해석의 가능성과 주체 존재의 다양한 탐구 영역을 확장시키고자 했다는 점에 있어서 의의가 있으며, 앞으로 더욱 활발하게 연구되어야 할 것이다.| This research begins with this question: Where did their passion for creativity come from for the homosexual male artists who appeared as explosive and collective figures in the western world of art in the late twentieth century? It analyzes their artworks with the concept of ‘Otherness’ in postmodernism, especially as to how their works reveal their otherness as homosexuals and how this feature is related to the revolutionary atmosphere of the time. The Others are “encrypted” as they change their appearances, “alienated” as they cannot claim their rights, and “threatening” as they make a crack within the solidified system. The author analyzes the works of the male homosexual artists with these keywords defining their otherness, namely “cryptogram,” “alienation,” and “threat.” The artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol, used to hide certain symbols that only homosexuals could recognize as the means to evade censorship. It has left open the possibility for various interpretations in their works appearing in the form of otherness of“cryptogram.” Francis Bacon and David Hockney after the 1960s used the spaces in their works to express their otherness, which characterizes their “alienation,” meaning they can be free only when they escape from the prejudices and negative perspectives of the society. The artists like Robert Mapplethorpe and Gilbert & George accused Christianity of being the source of the persecution of homosexuality especially by using body images. These works of homosexual artists were something threatening to the political system of the time. The mode of otherness in artworks has gradually changed in shifting historical environments. For these male homosexual artists in the late twentieth century’s western art world, common in their messages was the claim for the‘social recognition of their identities’ and ‘liberation of homosexuality,’ supported by the emergence of postmodernism and the novel concept of gender, both of which had facilitated the collapse of the value system of modernity. The approach of this research to the homosexuality and its focus on otherness in gender would leave open the possibility for a variety of interpretations, and lead to future research on different modes of subjectivity in the western world of art.
