Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest effective teaching method on auxiliary particles ‘do, kkaji, jocha, majeo’, by examine similarity and difference in syntactic and semantic characteristics of individual auxiliary particles and analyze the aspects of errors in usage through foreign Korean learners’ corpus.
‘do, kkaji, jocha, majeo’ has common meaning, ‘inclusion/addition’, but in detail, the meaning of them varies depending on context. Nevertheless, most of foreign Korean learners can’t identify the meanings and characteristics between ‘do, kkaji, jocha, majeo’ clearly because of lack of education on those four auxiliary particles. Thus, it is important to establish the suitable teaching method for foreign Korean leaners.
In chapter 1, we present the purpose and significance of this study, and review the previous studies based on Korean linguistics and pedagogy and describe how studies on ‘do, kkaji, jocha, majeo’ has been done. Then, introduce the methodology and main discussion in each chapters of this study.
In chapter 2, we find out the similarity and difference of semantic and syntactic characteristics of ‘do, kkaji, jocha, majeo’, after analyze meanings and grammatical distribution in each auxiliary particles.
In chapter 3, we examine usage errors through foreign Korean learners’ corpus established by Language Information Sharing Center, National Language Institute. We also classify the error types: Omission, Addition, Replacement, Misformation. Then, we analyze the educational contents of ‘do, kkaji, jocha, majeo’ in textbook by using 《한국어》(Konkuk University), 《재미있는 한국어》(Korea University), 《서울대 한국어》(Seoul National University), 《연세 한국어》(Yonsei University), 《이화 한국어》(Ewha Womans University), which were published by universities in Korea.
In chapter 4, according to the discussions in chapter 3, we suggest the teaching method refer to ‘Communicative Language Teaching’ model(Kim Jae Wook, et al. 2010). This model divided 5 stages, ‘Warm up-Presentation-Practice-Use-Follow up’.
Korean clarified auxiliary particles ‘do, kkaji, jocha, majeo’ stand in the various context. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish it clearly for most of foreign Korean learner. This study is significant because of focused on this situation to present a model. However, further research requires a more teaching experience through consistent studies.
