한강 소설에 나타나는 타자와 윤리 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 한강 소설이 그려내는 다양한 주제의식 중 타자(성)와 윤리에 주목하여, 타자(성)와 윤리가 한강 소설의 근본적인 뿌리임을 밝혀냄으로써 지금까지 발표된 한강 소설 세계의 전체적인 흐름을 파악해보고자 한다. 현대 사회에서 타자는 자기중심주의에 의해 공격당하거나 추방당하고 있다. 이러한 경향은 한 개인에 국한되지 않고, 자민족중심주의와 자국가중심주의 등 집단적사회적 현상으로까지 확대되고 있다. 타자는 이 시대에 설 자리가 없다. 이러한 배경에서 한강 소설을 살펴보는 것은 중요한데, 특히 한강 소설에 등장하는 주요 인물들 중 대다수가 ‘타자성’을 지니고 있기 때문이다. 여기서 ‘타자’는 레비나스의 개념으로, ‘나’라는 동일자에 환원되지 않는, 그 자체로 고유성을 지니며 ‘나’의 ‘전체성’을 벗어나 있는 ‘무한’이라고 할 수 있다. ‘무한’으로서의 ‘타자의 얼굴’은 ‘나’의 자유를 문제 삼고, ‘나’를 고통스럽게 하며, ‘책임적 주체’로 태어날 것을 명령한다. 그리고 여기서 타자에 대한 책임에서 더 나아가 그 타자의 타자, ‘그’나 ‘그녀’, 즉 ‘제3자’에 대한 책임으로까지 확대된다. 이는 주체와 타자와 그 타자의 타자, 그 타자의 타자로 연결되며 어떤 공동체를 형성한다. 본 연구는 이러한 레비나스의 윤리를 토대로 한강 소설의 타자를 살펴봄으로써 현 시대 우리의 타자를, 보다 근본적으로는 ‘나’라는 주체에 대해 성찰해보고자 한다. 본론에서는 이러한 레비나스의 윤리를 토대로 한강 소설의 인물들을 살펴볼 것이다. 본론 Ⅰ에서는 ‘나’를 무화시키고자하는 존재로부터의 탈출이 어떻게 이루어지며 그 후 홀로서기를 이룬 주체가 어떻게 타자를 향해 열리게 되는지를 한강의 첫 소설집인 『여수의 사랑』을 통해 살펴볼 것이다. 본론 Ⅱ에서는 레비나스 철학에서 가장 핵심적 개념이라 할 수 있는 ‘타자의 얼굴’과 윤리적 주체가 한강의 대표작 중 하나인 『채식주의자』에서 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 살펴볼 것이다. 본론 Ⅲ에서는 후기 레비나스의 핵심 개념인 타자에 의한, 타자를 위한 ‘책임의 윤리’가 어떻게 나타는지, 그리고 이러한 타자에 대한 책임이 ‘제3자’에게로 확대되며 만들어져가는 공동체란 어떤 모습인지를 5.18광주민주화운동을 다룬 한강의 또 다른 대표작 『소년이 온다』를 통해 살펴볼 것이다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 한강의 소설이 나타내는 타자성이 레비나스의 타자 윤리와 닿아있는 지점을 살펴봄으로써, 타자와 더불어 이러한 타자를 만나는 주체에 관해 논하고자 한다. |ABSTRACT

A Study on the Other and the Ethics in Han Kang's Novels

This study focuses on the other(ness) and ethics out of the various themes depicted in the novels of Han Kang and aims to understand the overall flow in her stories that have been published so far by revealing that other(ness) and ethics are the fundamental elements of her fictions. Otherness in modern society is being attacked or chased out by egocentric tendencies. This is not limited to individuals, but is expanding toward collective psyches including ethnocentrism, nationalism, and the like. There is no place where others can fit in this age. It is important to examine the narratives of Han Kang with this as the background, because the majority of the main characters in her novels are alienated others. The "Other" mentioned here is a concept advanced by Emmanuel Levinas, which does not revert to the same person who is the "ego," but can be said to have its own original traits and is an infinity that is outside the totality of the ego. The "face of the Other" as an infinity puts into question the freedom of ego, makes ego suffer, and demands that one be reborn as a responsible subject. In addition, responsibility for the Other should go further to expand toward the Other of that Other, which is the responsibility for a third party. This connects the subject to Other, and that Other to the Others of the Other, and forms a type of community. By examining the Others in the novels of Han Kang based on the ethics of Levinas, this study aims to contemplate on our Others in the current age and more fundamentally, the subject that is ego. In the main part of this essay, an examination will be made on the characters of the novels of Han Kang based on this ethics of Levinas. In Section I, I will examine how an escape is made from the entities that try to neutralize ego and how later when the subject is able to stand on their own, they meets the Others, goes through hardship and finally opens up to Others through her first novel 『A Love of Yeosu』(1995). In Section II, I will look into how the "face of the Other" and the ethical subject, which are the most central concepts in the philosophy of Levinas, are expressed in her best-known novel 『The Vegetarian』(2007). In Section III, I will review how the central concept in late Levinas, which is the "ethics of responsibility" by Others for Others, is expressed, as well as examine what form the community created as this responsibility for Others is expanded to a "third party" takes through the other widely-read novel 『Human Acts』(2014), which deals with the May 18th Gwangju Uprising. In conclusion, this study examines the aspects where the alterity shown in the novels of Han Kang is linked with the alterity of Levina’s ethics of Other in order to discuss the Other as well as the subject who needs such Others.
