- A Study on Ceramic Molding through Creation of Deficient Self and Healing
Various events and accidents occur in the rapid development and growth of modern society and the environment in which human lives are changing rapidly. Humans continue to progress through these various forms of stimulation by repeating growth and frustration, and in the process, we encounter various deficiencies. The meaning of deficiency as used in this paper refers to individual trauma, injury, and disadvantage. If these deficiencies are not resolved in the right way at the right time, they lead to major social problems. As a researcher, I may look stable and ordinary from the outside but I have experienced a time when I was confused about self-identity and have felt depressed and skeptical due to the internal deficiency that went unrecognized and the conflicts that arise from it, and the spread of negative emotions in social relationships. These experiences provoked me to blame myself when I had a hard time or was facing difficulty. All human beings have deficiency and they may live on without any problems for a while but suddenly the inner deficiencies are identified and feels anxiety and confusion. There are also times when we find our selves changing because of such deficiency. We do not want to show ourselves as having deficiencies, so while not perfect, we try to make ourselves look better or try to become better version of ourselves. It is because we have felt a deficiency that led to the desire to fill it, and the efforts we put in to satisfy our desire makes us grow into someone better. As such, the keyword 'deficiency', which becomes the focus of this study, is interpreted as not having the usual negative connotation but a driving force behind our growth that makes us realize what we lack and want to develop. Freud proved in his research that finding and recognizing one’s deficiency is the beginning of healing, and that if the deficiencies are described in detail, the hysteria disappeared. Therefore, by acknowledging and accepting the various deficiencies one has, he tried to relieve and cure the mental deficiency. The work of this study began from the experience of the researchers, and through the creation process and results that enabled me to face my deficiency as it is and to accept it, I realized that I can be healed I have also confirmed that deficiency is no longer a negative thing but something that could be the driving force for the development of the individual.
The research content of this paper is to mold a ceramic work that represents a deficient self and the process of healing. For this purpose, the various state of self-deficiency was divided into three forms: “internal”, “social”, and “healing”, and small keyword was selected for each form and a work was produced and then studied.
First, Chapter 1 Introduction announced that the purpose and method of the study were to show the right self-identity of the researcher and to show the possibility of healing of creative activities, and the contents and methods were described.
In the next two chapters, the process of and the reasoning behind selecting three keywords of 'internal deficiency', 'social deficiency' and 'healing of deficiency' were described. Afterwards, in Section 1 Internal Deprivation (Ego), I examined the definition and meaning of self and Freud's theory of psychoanalysis, and analyzed several previous works expressing internal deficiency. In Section 2, social deficiency, various deficits in relation to society were considered based on various social phenomena, and by referencing Erik Ericsson’s psychosocial development theory, the theoretical concept of how the deficiencies that were not satisfied in social relations are subsequently expressed were summarized and the previous works were analyzed. Section 3 Healing of Deficiency (Aura) aims to show how the concept of deficiency is shaped into a work to be resolved and healed. Through researching the concept and meaning of the aura, the scope of the aura that the researcher intends to express in this paper was summarized, art theory as treatment through art creation activities were summarized and based on the summary, and the previous works were analyzed.
Chapter 3 Production of Work and Analysis describes the creation process of , , and based on the previous studies analyzed above and analyzed formatively how deficiency and healing were created into visualized form in my work.
attempted to express the inner deficit of the self by borrowing the shape of the soil (cylinder). Various colors, materials, and textures were used to form the shape of various egos, and the installation work was done with the steel frame. borrowed the form of mass-produced identical empty plastic containers to express social deficiencies. Empty containers with same external forms were lined up and placed on shelves like goods. attempted to express the process of healing by acknowledging and accepting my deficiency as it is by using a custom produced large-scale mirror lighting and circular ceramic sculpture. Tens of circular ceramic lamps were installed on the floor and special mirrors were installed on the ceiling so that visitors could experience the space. The works in all three parts were created using slip casting as the main technique, and for soil, the main material soil, super white with uniform particles and high whiteness was used. Most of the glazing was done using oil-free firing, but in Ego, several color glazes were used to shape various egos. Electric kiln was using for oxidized firing, and was completed by firing initially at a temperature of 800°C and secondly at 1250°C.
Finally, in Chapter 4 Conclusion, the results of the paper were identified by summarizing the theoretical background discussed in Chapter 2, the results of previous work analysis and the contents of the and the contents of the researcher's own works described in Chapter 3.
