한국 노년소설에 나타난 말년의식과 죽음

Abstract

Most Koreans consider the absence of physical pain and natural finish of life as good death. This idea of death, however, offers no fundamental alternatives to overcome anxiety and fear about death among modern people. Inversely, human beings can have an idea of death at the human and character level. If it is true that the death of modern people today remains at the biological level, literature will need to be oriented toward a unique and dignified level beyond it. There are huge differences in the ways that people face their death according to their views of life and death in their latter years. In this sense, the idea of death among elderly writers is discriminated from the material-centric idea of death addressed in the old Korean literature as they make their death unique and individual via their awareness of their latter years. |대부분의 한국인이 생각하는 좋은 죽음은 신체가 고통 받지 않고 자연스럽게 마감하는 것이다. 하지만 이런 죽음 인식은 현대인들이 체감하는 죽음에 대한 불안과 공포를 넘어설 근본적인 대안을 제공하지 못한다. 이에 인간은 역으로 인간적이고도 인격적인 차원의 죽음 인식을 가질 수 있다. 오늘날 현대인의 죽음이 생물학적인 차원에 머물고 있다면, 이를 넘어선 고유하고도 존엄한 차원을 문학에서도 지향할 필요가 있다. 말년에 어떤 생사관을 지니고 있느냐에 따라 죽음을 맞이하는 방식은 차이가 크다. 그런 의미에서 노년작가들의 죽음 인식은 기존 한국문학에서 다루었던 소재주의적 죽음 인식과는 변별력이 있다. 그것은 말년의식을 매개로 죽음을 고유화하고 개별화하기 때문이다.
