- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to interpret the ‘One-stroke’, which is important concept of the Shitao discourse, from the perspective of Southern Chan Buddhism and on this basis conduct a study on the 『Hua Yu Lu(畵語錄)』
In a total of 18 chapters, the 『Hua Yu Lu(畵語錄)』 systematically and specifically describes the process that artists need to have before drawing, from creating, to finishing and appreciating, and strongly expresses the importance of creation and creative development to the painters of that time who were focused on the Master’s rules.
One important concept that penetrates the entire creative process is the ‘One-stroke’ that content of the 『Hua Yu Lu(畵語錄)』. Based on various prior studies of the Shitao, this paper tries to examine what the meaning of the ‘One-stroke’ by Shitao is.
It is understood that the ideological basis of Shitao in the study is based on China's Chan, especially the Southern Chan Buddhism. And In the Chan Buddhism’s point of view, I will find out what ‘One-stroke’ of Shitao is, and through this, I will look at the text of 『Hua Yu Lu(畵語錄)』 how ‘One-stroke’ covers the entire creative process.
It is a well-known fact that Shitao was a descendant of the late Ming family and was entrusted with Buddhism after the fall of the dynasty. Through his Master(旅庵本月), he was taught deeply in the truth of Buddhism and in the writing, painting and the writing of poetry. In addition, Due to the influence of his Master, he was able to turn his eyes to arithmetic and nature from the study methods that were immersed in ancient books.
"One-stroke" is a process of realizing and breaking away from all shackles, at the same time as "the law of one-stroke" and aims to enter the stage of pure experience through "One-stroke." However, 'One-stroke' is not in itself trying to bind the painters by establishing a fixed rule or principle of art.
Once the "Rule of One-stroke" is obtained, the obstacles to the law created by the general law disappear and naturally the obstacles disappear in the paintings, allowing the artist to create a free creation that has shown his individuality.
