Abstract

The purpose of this study is to systematically examine the discourse markers in Jeonnam dialect by analyzing the syntactic and semantic characteristics and discourse functions of the individual discourse markers in Jeonnam dialect by employing the existing dialectic transcription data. In this regard, we set up the upper criteria that can cover various functions of discourse markers according to the context of discourse, and tried to grasp its function in relation to the lexical meaning of its each originated form. In addition, we tried to advance our understanding of the difference between the regional dialects by summarizing and presenting the variations of the individual discourse markers in regional dialects of Jeonnam dialect. This study is organized as follows. In Chapter 1, we present the purpose and necessity of this study, and review the previous research and describe how research on discourse markers has been done. Then, the subjects and methodology of the research are introduced, and the process of the discussion is presented. In Chapter 2, we discuss the concepts, features, and types of discourse markers that correspond to the theoretical background of discourse markers, as well as their developmental mechanisms in terms of ‘Grammaticalization’, ‘Subjectification’, and ‘Cooptation’. In Chapter 3, we classify the types of individual discourse markers in Jeonnam dialect according to its originated form: ‘Inherent forms’, ‘Word originated forms’, ‘Conjugated forms of nominals and verbals originated forms’, ‘Phrase originated forms’. And we analyze functions of individual discourse markers by setting the criteria to analyze functions of each discourse markers: ‘functions on speaker’s discourse strategy’, ‘functions on topic', ‘functions on speaker’s attitude’. In addition, we describe functions of individual discourse markers by considering that the discourse function of he individual discourse sign was derived according to the original lexical meaning. In Chapter 4, we summarize the conclusions drawn from this study and try to clarify the significance and limitations of this study and future challenges. Based on the above discussion, we confirmed that the discourse sign, which is commonly used in most dialects of Korea from word to phrase, was also found in Jeonnam dialect. In addition, unlike the central and other dialects, there were discrepant discouse markers with different distribution and function, and features that characterize the transitional areas according to regional dialect. This indicates that discourses, which are commonly used in many dialects, may differ according to region or dialectal area. This study is significant because it systematically approached the discourse markers in dialect transcription and extended the existing research on discourse in dialect. However, further research is necessary to clarify the actual usage patterns of the dialectal discourse markers by quantitative analysis and the characteristics of discourse markers through the contrast between other dialects.
