This study aims to analyze the effect of South Korea's foreign direct investment in Vietnam focusing on the exports and imports between two countries from 2002 to 2016. Along with the steep numerical increase of Korea's foreign direct investment in Vietnam, the trade between two countries are increasing gradually in recent years. As a result, Vietnam ranked as fourth among the countries of Korea's foreign direct investment and export in 2016.
Based on the gravity model, this study examined models of panel generalized least squares and the fixed effect with variables of Korea's foreign direct investment in Vietnam, the exports and imports between two countries and their gross domestic products and real effective exchange rates respectively.
The results are as follows. First, it was observed that Korea's foreign direct investment in Vietnam increased in most industries with respect to both exports and imports between two countries, but the reverse-import effect was slightly more prominent than the export-inducing effect. Second, it was shown that there was an export-substituting effect in textile and clothing industries, whereas an import-substituting effect was presented in non-metallic, primary metal and metal processing industries.
The results of this study suggest that exporting intermidate goods from Korea and importing final goods from Vietnam increased, as Korea continues to invest briskly in manufacturing industries in Vietnam.
