Abstract
In order to improve global environmental pollution and international food shortage problems, smart farming has been actively studied recently. In particular, combined studies on the enhancement of crop yield, improvement of crop quality, and minimization of agriculture environmental management costs have been conducted in order to improve international food shortage issues and the self-sufficiency of agricultural products. Such studies were to intelligently control environmental conditions such as light, temperature, humidity, and CO2 concentration, as well as the composition of culture media. It is expected that large economic effects from agricultural products grown in a controlled cultivation setting would be seen in the organic food market, which has been growing continuously since 2000. The organic food market has grown from 15 billion dollars in 1990 to 80 billion dollars in 2014, corresponding to an 5.3-fold increase. In such a huge market, the agricultural technology in individual units and the application of smart farm technology is anticipated to bring large profits; thus, many studies have been promoted.
In this study, a closed hydroponics device was designed and fabricated in order to grow and harvest plants in a small space for safe consumption, which enables horticultural activities that are difficult to perform due to space constraints from urbanization. This device also aimed to minimize the air pollution of crops. To obtain data for the optimal growth conditions for crops in this intelligent plant growing system, sensors were used to measure and control the growth conditions. To investigate the optimal growth conditions, blue lettuce and crown daisy were selected as representative crops. From four experiments for each plant, the growth rates were comparatively analyzed. This hydroponics device was used to collect data on growth rates that are altered depending on cultivation condition, which can then be used to study methods to control the growth rate of crops.
