- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to investigate the casual effect of OCD(obsessive compulsive diorder) related belief(intolerance of uncertainty and perfectionism) on OCD symptoms, and the mediating effect of self compassion on the relation between these two variables.
For this purpose, 387 male and female university students in G city were sampled. Self report questionnaires, Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ-44), Self-Compassion Scale-Revised-Korean (SCS) and Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised-Korean (OCI-R-K) were conducted on this sample and statistical analysis were performed with this data using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0.
The results of the study can be summarized as follows.
First, in the correlation analysis, significant positive correlation(.560) were found between intolerance of uncertainty and perfectionism and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. And significant negative correlation were found between self-compassion and intolerance of uncertainty and perfectionism(-.595) and between self-compassion and obsessive-compulsive symptoms(-.460).
Second, in the SEM(Structural Equational Modeling) analysis, mediating effect of SC on the relation between intolerance of uncertainty and perfectionism and obsessive-compulsive symptoms were found. Thus, it was confirmed that intolerance of uncertainty and perfectionism has the directly significant effects on an obsessive-compulsive symptom, and even indirectly significant effects through the mediating variable self-compassion.
It can be said that the results of the study would help in having a broader understanding about the mechanisms of an obsessive-compulsive symptom. This means that self-compassion gives an effect as an mediating factor in treating an obsessive-compulsive symptom. In other words, the results of this study indicate that the mindfulness or acceptance factors such as self compassion should be incorporated in treating obsessive-compulsive related problems.
