Introduction: Menopause cause many hormone and metabolic changes and the risk of diabetes increase in menopause women. Therefore this article determined the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes and related factors in Korean postmenopausal women

Methods: We used the datas from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The datas were conducted from 2011 to 2012. Out of 16,576, 3,074 was postmenopausal women. We excluded known diabetes, premature menopause, fasting glucose checked before 8 hours, and missing value, and a total of 2,210 was analysed. Diabetes was defined as fasting gluse over 126mg/dL, and HbA1c over 6.5%.

Results: The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes in Korea postmenopausal women was 6.8%. They were older, more obese, under educated and the prevalence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia was higher than the people with no diabetes. The menarche age was late, but the age at menopause, breast feeding, oral contraceptive did not show significant difference. The logistic regression analysis result showed that waist circumference over 80cm(odds ratio [OR] 2.623 [95% CI 1.517-4.534]), hypertension(1.847 [1.120-3.045]), hyperlipidemia(2.109 [1.314-3.383]) significantly increased the prevalence of diabetes, and the risk increased when a person had two, or three components of metabolic characteristics.

Conclusion: The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes in Korea postmenopausal women was 6.8%. The components of metabolic syndrome significantly increased the prevalence of diabetes. Therefore individualized approach to components of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women is needed to diagnose and manage diabetes.
