This dissertation consists of an annotation of a graduate recital program for master's degree. This program is composed of a total of three pieces from the era of Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, namely, J. S. Bach「Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009」, L. v. Beethoven「Sonata for Piano and Cello No. 2 in G minor, Op. 5」, D. Popper「Hungarian Rhapsody for Cello and Piano, Op. 68」.
Firstly, Bach's unaccompanied「Cello suite No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009」, composed in 1720s, is a baroque suite consisting of Prelude and various dance movements. This piece is considered to be a momentum to raise the role of Cello, which has taken a role of accompaniment only, as a solo instrument. We will analyze composition and melodic structure and structure of this piece to help understand the piece.
Secondly, L. v. Beethoven's「Cello Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 5」in the period of classicism is a piece that adds a romantic element to classical music. The harmonic and melodic structure of the piece is equally assigned to both Cello and Piano. This piece proves that the Cello is not any longer limited to a subsidiary role with taking a main theme. In this dissertaion, the melodic and harmonic structure will be analized to enhance to the understanding of the piece.
Finally, Popper's「Hungarian Rhapsody Op. 68」is a piece that includes romantic and nationalistic musical elements, and although it has been frequently played by Cello performers, it has not been interested in musicology. It is a piece that shows the rich compositional structure and composition of the Cello in the range of the Cello by surely listening to the technical side of the Cello such as Cadenza etc. By analyzing composition and melodic structure and structure of this piece, we want to improve understanding of music of romantic music and help to play.
In this dissertation, we aim not only to analyze piece but also to improve the understanding the works by explaining the life and the background of each work in each period.
