Abstract

The most important thing in learning foreign languages is communication. To do the communication well, we should understand that country’s culture, history, and customs as well as learn their language. I think we can understand more about a country’s culture by studying on proverbs. Proverbs are important parts of language and a corporate body of language and culture. In this aspect, this study was to compare cultural similarities and differences appeared in proverbs by classifying forms and meanings of proverbs related to Korean and Chinese food. a Both Korea and China are neighboring countries with long history and have had close relationship in various ways such as politics, economy, and culture. Although both countries have lots of similarities, there are evident differences as they have their own ethnic and cultural characteristics. Food is an essential element for people in the process of living and, though it, we can deliver vivid meanings that a language holds. Thus, this study limited the study subject to the proverbs related to food with the close relation to people’s daily lives. The subjective study contents are as follows. At first, it looked at the concept and characteristics of both countries’ proverbs, suggested the exact concept and category of food proverbs, and then looked at the characteristics of food proverbs. Then, it divided into the same shape-same meaning, the same shape-different meaning, different shape-same meaning, and different shape-different meaning and compared them. Through these, it figured out the culture included in the food proverb of both countries as well as their languages. Lastly, it analyzed the similarities and differences between their cultures which were the cause of their similarity and difference in the food proverbs of Korea and China. Until now, Korea and China have exchanged influences in politics, economy, and culture each other. In the global times that the exchange between countries gets vivid, the study on the cultural difference and language learning of Korea and China has an important meaning. The similarity and difference through the comparison of food proverbs also have the same meaning as well.
