The Effect of Pilates Reformer Exercise on Body Composition, Electromyogram of Abdominal Muscles
and Blood Free Oxygen Radical in Middle Age Women

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an 8-week pilates reformer program on body composition and activity and oxygen free radicals in abdominal muscles of middle-aged women by dividing them into an experimental group (that participated in the pilates program) and a control group. The participants of this study consisted of twenty middle-aged women and ten women were randomly assigned in each group. Paired t - test was used for comparison between the groups and independent t - test was used for comparison within the groups. The statistical tests were carried out at the significance level of .05. The res㎕ts were as follows.
1. In the case of body composition, there was no change on weight, BMI, and body fat percentage after the 8-week pilates reformer program. There was a small increase on skeletal muscle mass but no significant difference(p>.05). There was no change on weight, BMI, body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle mass on the control group. Also, there was no significant difference between two groups(p>.05).
2. Abdominal muscles activity changes were as follows.
(1) After the pilates reformer program, the experimental group showed significant difference on the average muscle activity in rectus abdominis(RA), external oblique(EO), and internal oblique abdominal muscle(IO)(p<.05). There was no change in the control group.
RA and EO especially showed significant differences in the experimental group(p<.05).
(2) The maximum value of muscle activity of abdominal muscles of RA and EO of the experimental group increased significantly(p<.05). However, IO had no significant change. The control group showed no change.
(3) The minimum value of muscle activity of abdominal muscles RA, EO, and IO increased significantly among the experimental group(p<.05). Control group showed no change.
The minimum value of muscle activity of RA and EO especially showed significant differences in the experimental group(p<.05).
3. The change of oxygen free radicals increased significantly in the experimental group after the program(p<.001). Comparison between groups showed no significant change(p>.05).
According to Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey Ⅴ of Center of Disease Control & Prevention, the prevalence of obesity of age-specific BMI(kg/m2) of 25 and over increased dramatically from 17.9% in 30s to 25.7% in 40s, 33.7% in 50s and 42.7% in 60s.
With regard to the res㎕ts, there was no substantial effect on losing weight and reducing body fat through pilates reformer exercise. However, it co㎕d be a functional exercise for increasing muscle strength.
When menopausal middle-aged women in their 40-50's want to work out reg㎕arly for effective health care, pilates reformer program sho㎕d be coordinated in detail with duration, strength, and frequency as well as strict diet. Further concrete study with large sample sizes is needed.
