- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the effects of fissure preparation on penetration and microleakage of flowable resin in cariogenic occlusal fissure.
Two hundred extracted premolars with initial cariogenic pit and fissure were used. Fissure preparations with four types of bur (no preparation vs. Fissurotomy® Original bur, Fissurotomy® Micro NTF bur, Resin finishing bur and 1/2 round carbide bur) were performed. Two types of flowable resin (Unifil® Flow and Filtek® Flow) were applied. The teeth were embeded in an epoxy resin block, then dyed with methylene blue. All teeth were cut bucco-lingually to examine penetration and microleakage with a microscope.
Based on analysis of the results of penetration, fissure preparation with Fissurotomy® Original bur or 1/2 round carbide bur in Unifil® Flow groups showed significant differences compared with the control group (p<0.05), and fissure preparation with 1/2 round carbide bur in Filtek® Flow groups showed significant difference compared with the control group (p<0.05). Moreover, there was significantly deeper penetration in Unifil® Flow groups compared with Filtek® Flow groups (p<0.05). Fissure preparation with Fissurotomy® Original bur or 1/2 round carbide bur showed less microleakage than control groups in Unifil® Flow groups and Filtek® Flow groups (p<0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference in two flowable resins.
