This study aimed to examine the influence of Yeonpa Hyejang(1772-1811) who was the Buddhist monk at Daedunsa temple in the later Chosun Dynasty on the revival of tea culture. The existing studies on Yeonpa have covered his poems, zen, tea, calligraphy and thought, but they were poor and so were studies on tea. They merely revealed that there was the tea for exchanges with people around Yeonpa at Baekryeonsa temple, Goseongsa temple and Daedunsa temple rather than examining Yeonpa as tea lover who left his footprints for the revival of tea.
Therefore, this study focused on his poems which shouldn't be overlooked on the basis of existing findings of studies. It is obvious that he played the leading roles in the revival of tea culture. But, it should be pointed out that why he was well-known as such a tea lover was based on ‘Baeksusi’(a piece of poetry among his poems). It was also related to the fact that he was a Hwaeom lecturer and great zen monk representing Daedunsa temple at that time.
In particular, this study emphasized that the revival of tea culture at that time was inseparable from the pen name of Yeonpa. Dasan Jeong Yak Yong (1762-1836) who was exiled to Gangjin in 1801 and Chusa Kim Jeong Hee(1786-1856) who led the introduction of advanced culture from the Qing dynasty recognized his poems. Yeonpa wrote his collection of poems 󰡔Aamjip󰡕, but it was edited 110 years after his death. When he was alive, he wrote the collection of poems 󰡔Yeonpa Inggo󰡕, which contains Yeonpa's Baeksusi. Of course, 󰡔Aamjip󰡕 had also Baeksusi, but it was confirmed that there was the entry of letters compared with 󰡔Yeonpa Inggo󰡕. As 󰡔Yeonpa Inggo󰡕 owned by Chusa was widely known at home and abroad, Yeonpa made his mark to China. As Yeonpa's works were published on 󰡔Damjeongchongseo󰡕 by Daejeong Kim Ryeo(1766-1822) at home, many people became to know Yeonpa and he also amazed the best scholar Ong Banggag(1733-1818) who was proficient in the calligraphy and epigraphy as well as scripture・ history・ literature in China. Ong Banggang's praise made Chusa reevaluate Yeonpa, but their relationship ended because of Yeonpa's death. So there was no trace that Yeonpa met Chusa. Choeui Euisun(1786-1866) who was the same age as Chusa replaced Yeonpa. Moreover, Choeui was Dasan's pupil and Chusa's tea friend in place of Yeonpa and revived the tea culture centering around Daedunsa temple in the late Chosun dynasty. Choeui's tea followed Beomhae Gakan(1820-1896) who received Upasampada from Choeui. It is said the tea culture in the later Chosun dynasty was led by these people.
It is necessary to point out that the distinction of this study was found out from the point of mentioning Yeonpa’s leading role to revive the tea culture in the late of Chosun dynasty through his poem ‘Baeksusi’. It means that he influenced on the development of the tea culture in the later of Chosun dynasty in the fields of literature, religion and ideology.
