Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a disaster nursing education program on the disaster nursing competency among nursing students. Methods: A quasi-experimental with non-equivalent control group pre and posttest design was used. The subjects were third year nursing students who were recruited from 2 nursing colleges in G metropolitan city. A total of 60 subjects were assigned to 30 in experimental group and 30 in control group. A disaster nursing education program was developed based on ‘ICN framework of disaster nursing competencies’ and was provided using case-based small group learning method to the experimental group once a week for four weeks, 120 minutes per session. The control group did not receive any intervention. In this study, disaster nursing competencies include disaster nursing knowledge, disaster triage and disaster readiness. The disaster nursing competency of the subjects were examined with self-reporting structured questionnaires. Data were collected from August 26 to September 12, 2016. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 21.0 program. General characteristics of subjects were analyzed with descriptive statistics and homogeneity test was conducted with χ²-test, Fisher's exact test and independent t-test. Hypotheses test to evaluate the effect of a disaster nursing education program were tested with independent t-test on disaster nursing knowledge, disaster triage and disaster readiness. Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group showed significant differences in disaster nursing knowledge (t=14.37, p<.001), disaster triage (t=7.90, p=.002) and disaster readiness (t=10.82, p<.001). Conclusion: The results indicated that a disaster nursing education program based on ‘ICN Framework of Disaster Nursing Competencies’ with case-based small group learning was effective in increasing disaster nursing competency and useful intervention strategy for nursing students. Further research should be continued to perform repeated study on disaster nursing education program for nursing students.
