Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the antimicrobial activity of currently purchasable denture cleansing agents in Korea against Candida albicans.

Materials and methods: Three tablet-form denture cleansing agents with enzyme; PolidentⓇ, CoolingdentⓇ; without enzyme; FittydentⓇ; and three liquid-form denture cleansing agents; HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ, Apple vinegarⓇ were used. C. albicans culture fluid of 1 x 107, 1 x 106, 1 x 105, 1 x 104, 1 x 103 cfu/㎖ were prepared. Each 0.04 g of powder-forms of PolidentⓇ, CoolingdentⓇ and FittydentⓇ were prepared and put into 2 ㎖ of 0.5 x 107, 0.5 x 106, 0.5 x 105, 0.5 x 104, 0.5 x 103 cfu/㎖ culture fluid respectively with five minutes activation. Each 1 ㎖ of liquid-forms of HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ and Apple vinegarⓇ were prepared. After that, each 1 ㎖ of 1 x 107, 1 x 106, 1 x 105, 1 x 104, 1 x 103 cfu/㎖ culture fluid reacted with liquid-form denture cleansing agents respectively for five minutes. Each 10 ㎕ of solutions were collected and smeared twice on the BHI solid medium. After 24 hours cultivation at 37℃, newly formed colonies were counted by visual inspection. PolidentⓇ, CoolingdentⓇ, and FittydentⓇ of 0.01 g, 0.02 g, 0.04 g, and 0.08 g were prepared in powder form. FittydentⓇ of 0.005 g and 0.03 g was also prepared in additional. 2 ㎖ of 0.5 x 106 cfu/㎖ culture fluid was added to each of the prepared powder-form denture cleansing agents and allowed to react for 5 minutes. 1 ㎖ of 1 x 106 cfu/㎖ culture fluid were added to each of 1 ㎖ of HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ, and Apple vinegarⓇ, prepared by adding the original solution and the diluted solutions at 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 times, and reacted for 5 minutes. 10 ㎕ of each sample was diluted 1/100 times, and then plated on BHI solid medium twice. These were examined after culturing.

Results: In the 0.5 x 106 cfu/㎖ culture medium, the C. albicans’ death rate of PolidentⓇ was significantly lower than FittydentⓇ, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ, and Apple vinegarⓇ(p<0.05). In the 0.5 x 107 cfu/㎖ culture medium, the C. albicans’ death rate of PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ was significantly lower than FittydentⓇ, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ, and Apple vinegarⓇ(p<0.05). The C. albicans’ death rate of PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ was also significantly decreased at 0.02 g and 0.01 g, and the C. albicans’ death rate of FittydentⓇ was significantly decreased at 0.005 g(p<0.05). The C. albicans’ death rate of HexamedineⓇ was significantly decreased at 1/16 dilution. The C. albicans’ death rate of ListerineⓇ was decreased at 1/8 dilution, and the antimicrobial activity of Apple vinegarⓇ was decreased at 1/4 dilution(p<0.05).

Conclusion: As the number of C. albicans increases, the antimicrobial activity of denture cleansing agents decreases. FittydentⓇ, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ and Apple vinegarⓇ were superior to PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ in the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity against C. albicans. PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ are recommended to use one dose at one time, and FittydentⓇ can be used 1/3 at one time. HexamedineⓇ can be used as 1/8 dilution, ListerineⓇ can be used as 1/4 dilution, and Apple vinegarⓇ can be used as 1/2 dilution.
