- Abstract
- This research study conducted a survey on the current state of what middle aged women between the ages of 40 and 50 actually wore when they went out, and in order to investigate the importance of desired image, physical appearance and fashion style according to interpersonal relationship preferences and also to investigate what they wore when going out, a research method using a survey was conducted.
The subjects of this research were 409 females in their 40’s and 50’s living in the city of Gwangju who were selected using a random sampling protocol by taking into consideration the age of the potential research subjects.
The collected data was processed and prepared for analysis using SPSS WIN 18.0 and analyzed using the methods of frequency, percentile, average, Cronbach’s α reliablity coefficient, cluster analysis, one way-ANOVA, Duncan’s multiple range test, cross tabulation analysis, and the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.
The results of the research can be summarized as follows.
1. A Survey on Outfits that Middle Aged Women Actually Wear When Going Out
To determine the current situation of what middle aged women wear when going out, an on-site survey was conducted against middle aged women between the ages of 40-50, and using images that were taken on site, the survey and data was analyzed. The analysis confirmed that middle aged women had a tendency to pair bonding pants with a jacket while carrying a shoulder bag or hand bag, while styling medium length hair into a wavy hair style with volume. This can be interpreted as a style that reflects current trends while also complimenting the changed physical appearance and hair style of middle aged women caused by hormonal changes and aging. Therefore it can be said that the outfits that middle aged women wear when going out are outfits that reflect their physical and social characteristics.
2. The Categorization of Middle Aged Women According to Their Interpersonal Relationship Preferences
In order to categorize middle aged women into groups according to their interpersonal relationship preference factors, cluster analysis was conducted on 4 types of factor by summing up the scores for each of the 4 interpersonal relationship preference factors presented in this research study. As a result the women were categorized into the 3 groups of ‘sympathetic and accepting interpersonal relationship group’, the ‘friendly (extroverted) interpersonal relationship group’ and the ‘introverted interpersonal relationship group’.
3. In Interpersonal Relationships According to the Interpersonal Relationship Preference Type, the Differences in Physical Appearance and the Importance, Desired Image and Style of Fashion
First, in interpersonal relationships according to interpersonal relationship preference, physical appearance and the importance of fashion style showed statistically significant differences for outfit, makeup, brands, hair style, language, shoes, brand name and luxury bags and jewelry. In other words, the group that was more friendly in interpersonal relationships was shown to place a greater importance on physical appearance and image when it came to interpersonal relationships.
Second, with the exception of ‘an image that looks comfortable’, the research confirmed that there was a statistically significant difference in desired image according to interpersonal relationship preference type. In other words, people who were categorized into the group of people who were friendlier in interpersonal relationships showed a tendency to desire to express a greater variety of images, and people who were categorized into the group of people who were introverted in interpersonal relationships were shown to have a lower desire to express their image through their outfits or through physical decorations.
Third, for style of outfit when going out according to interpersonal relationship preference type, the results confirmed that there were partially statistically significant differences. In other words, for outfits according to interpersonal relationship preference type, the long vest and long knit vest were shown to be partially statistically significant different and that women who were friendlier in interpersonal relationships had a higher score of wearing long vests and long knit vests compared to that of the other two groups.
4. The Correlation between Desired Image, the Importance of Physical Appearance and Fashion in Interpersonal Relationships and Fashion Style of Outfit Factors
First, the research confirmed that there was a partial correlation in the relationship between desired image and the effect of physical appearance and fashion in interpersonal relations.
Second, the research confirmed that there was a partially statistically significant relationship in the relationship between desired image and outfit worn (top).
From the research results it could be confirmed that according to the interpersonal relationship preference type of women there were difference in physical appearance and fashion style and also desired image and even in outfits worn when going out. It could also be concluded that physical appearance and outfits are very effective tools for expressing personally desired images within interpersonal relationships. The research confirmed that women who were friendly in interpersonal relationships desired various physical appearances and fashion and that they perceived that physical appearances and fashion had a significant influence on interpersonal relationships. But for women who were introverted in interpersonal relationships, it was shown that they considered the language a person uses to have more influence than physical appearance and fashion within interpersonal relationships. The research also confirmed that short lengthed hair into a wavy hair style with volume was the most popular style for middle aged women. This confirms that due to a loss elasticity and loss of hair, middle aged women were uncomfortable having a straight hair style, and it can be interpreted that because curly hair gives an unsophisticated look, there was a low tendency to style their hair in a curly look.
It can be seen from the results above that in terms of physical appearance and fashion outfit selection and style, middle aged women tended to express themselves in ways that could complement their physical flaws while also not deviating too much from current trends. Also by perceiving that physical appearance and fashion outfit style was a very important tool within interpersonal relationships, it could be seen that there was a high tendency for middle aged women to wear many outfits that reflect current trends. Therefore through these results, it can be seen that the importance of coordinating outfits harmoniously is very important not only for young women but also for middle aged women.
