- Abstract
- This paper is to estimate total factor productivity(TFP) growth and its contributing factors(technical progress, technical efficiency change, scale efficiency) for manufacturing of Jeonnam, Chungnam and Kyungbuk. For that object, this uses the true fixed-effects stochastic production frontier analysis(SFA) considered of technical inefficiency. The empirical results, based on balanced panel data from 1999∼2014 with 23 industries, are as follows. First, technical inefficiency existed in manufacturing of Jeonnam, Chungnam and Kyungbuk. Second, technical progress is non-neutral onward to labor-saving and capital-using in Jeonnam and Chungnam, labor-using and capital-saving in Kyungbuk. Third, in some manufacturing industries, increasing returns to scale can be a significant presence in Jeonnam. Chungnam and Kyungbuk has scale inefficiency. Forth, technical progress shows the most impact on TFP growth. The highest TFP growth is in Kyungbuk, the lowest in Chungnam. Chungnam TFP growth measures lower owing to lower technical efficiency and scale inefficiency. As a result, this paper shows that technical progress has the key role in productivity improvement, but technical efficiency and scale efficiency also can not be overlooked.
