Abstract
This study attempts to analyze the famous UK composer Purcell’s vocal music, that is part of graduate performances . The purpose of the study is to perform voice effectively through a high understanding of Purcell’s time period, lifetime and musical characteristics in theory and exact analysis of composition.
Purcell is one of the most representative musicians of Baroque period, as he composed a variety of music. In particular his vocal art songs have had a significant effect on later period in perfect harmony with English lyrics. The opera “Dido and Aeneas” is Purcell’s only opera song composed in 1689. This work was developed in a small opera-house format in which the only content is singing. It creates dramatic expression by applying Baroque era’s musical diction. Especially the is a unique ground-based work before Dido died singing arias.
Incidental music is composed for Dryden and Lee plays Oedipus(1692) and depicted the lyrics to the pictorial technique. Also, an eighth note broken by the comma in the “Drop” reveals the desperate feelings. In other words, Purcell has placed great importance on using a comma, that showed a dramatic expression through repeated lyrics.
Incidental music emphasizes the meaning of the words to describe the language with music by using Melisma figuration and melody to either raise or low the pitch.
In short, Purcell’s vocal works have much artistic merit and well describe the sense of human emotions in music theory, vocal elements and English lyrics.
